Farm Fact Friday!
Did you know?
As of January 2026, the U.S. cattle herd totaled 86.2 million head of cattle and calves,

More people, less beef!
So why are cattle numbers declining?
There are several contributing factors:
Drought across many cattle-producing states reduced pasture availability and forced ranchers to sell cattle they otherwise would have kept.
Higher feed, fuel, land, and labor costs have made it more expensive than ever to raise cattle.
An aging ranching population and challenges passing operations to the next generation (specifically inheritance tax issues) have also reduced herd expansion.
High barriers to entry for new ranchers: Rising land, livestock, equipment, and operating costs make ranching one of the most capital-intensive industries to enter, creating significant challenges for first-generation producers looking to start a cattle operation.
Fewer replacement heifers have been retained for breeding, slowing the rebuilding process.
And rebuilding a herd doesn't happen overnight.
Heifers must first be retained for breeding instead of being sold. After breeding, it takes about 9 months for a calf to be born, and then 18โ24 months before that animal reaches market weight. As a result, herd rebuilding can take 3 to 4 years or more before additional beef reaches consumers.
That's one reason beef supplies remain tight even when cattle prices are highโranchers can't simply "make more cattle" overnight!
It's easy to grab a steak from the meat case, but getting that steak there takes years of planning, investment, and hard work across the beef supply chain.
Thank you for supporting local ranchers and American agriculture! โค๏ธ๐ค
