Our farm is located on 80 acres. Most of it we keep in meadow or forest to create wildlife and pollinator habitat. As part of that, I love exploring native plantings, particularly ones that can perform double duty as drought tolerant cut flowers. Two years ago, we planted giant camas in this field. It’s one of my favorite native flowers and has so much meaning in the Willamette Valley given the importance of camas to the original inhabitants of this land. It doesn’t have the vase life of other spring flowers, but it makes up for that with its beauty, its unique coloring and its significance in our part of the world. We haven’t irrigated this camas or done anything at all post planting. It’s thrilling to see it thriving. We’ll continue experimenting with meadow plantings to see what else we can give back to the land that will also expand environmentally friendly cuttings.

What an amazing experience to have Debra Prinzing, the founder of Slow Flowers, visit your farm! It was a delight to talk all things flower with her, provide a tour for the Slow Flowers Podcast, and get to see her latest book about flower farmers. Debra is a force of nature and has been an incredible influence in sustainable and local flower farming!
