It's always hard when a killing frost comes. Our plants were far from winding down, and we had soooooo many fun things planted in hopes of a late October frost! But you can't argue with Mother Nature, and in some ways, this will be a blessing because we can now focus wholeheartedly on prepping everything for winter.
On one hand, we're sad for our poor plants which were so beautiful, but on the other, we're excited to get a reprieve from our busiest growing season yet.
What's next? We'll have our last fresh dahlia bouquets at the Lane County Farmer's market this Saturday, October 17. After that, we be transitioning to mostly dried flower bouquets and wreaths, and possibly some pressed flower jewelry, for late October-December farmer's markets.
For the next five weeks, we'll focus on planting the last of our cold hardy annuals to overwinter until spring, putting peonies and dahlias to bed, planting thousands of tulip bulbs, and pre-sprouting and planting thousands of ranunculus and anenomes in our greenhouses for a spectacular spring! If all goes well, our hope is to rest come Thanksgiving. :)
