After Halloween has passed and the jack-o’-lanterns have turned into mush, what do you do with the pumpkins?
✴️Composting is a great idea! Pumpkins compost faster when broken down into small pieces. Remove any candles, wax, paint, stickers, or anything else that isn’t natural.
✴️You can also turn jack-o’-lanterns that haven’t severely decayed into bird feeders! Fill the hollowed-out pumpkin with birdseed and place it outside for your backyard birds to enjoy. This is a great way to extend the use of your jack-o’-lanterns!
✴️If you're thinking about throwing it into the woods for wildlife, just make sure the pumpkins are not painted or have other non-natural substances on or in them like candles, LED lights, decorations, etc. that could be ingested by animals and cause harm. Obviously, only dispose of pumpkins on property that you have permission to.

Consider wiping down pumpkins with a 1-part bleach, 10-parts water solution to kill bacteria before setting them outside. This can help them last longer in your fall display!
Here's more tips on how to keep your pumpkin decor looking its very best...
🎃One of the most important things you can do is find pumpkins with no surface damage. Don’t buy pumpkins with bruises and signs of rotting. Pumpkins without damage generally last longer than those with defects.
🎃Where you place your pumpkin display can also play a role in how long they will last. When setting up your fall decor, avoid wet areas. Find a spot that is well drained to avoid decomposition.
🎃The longevity of pumpkins is shortened once carved. After carving pumpkins, use petroleum jelly to help seal the exposed flesh. This seal will keep the pumpkins moist and create a barrier to bacteria. Coat any exposed surfaces, including the inside and the cut-out sections.
🎃A great alternative to carving pumpkins is painting them. Choosing to paint your pumpkins instead of puncturing them ensures that they stay fresh longer, since there will not be any cuts on the surfaces.

🐝In honor of —Honey bee swarms are part of the natural process colonies go through when they outgrow their current living space! Honey bees are not usually aggressive when swarming because they don’t have a hive to protect.
They are simply splitting off from the original colony. They land on a bush or other object temporarily, and from the protective ball of bees, they send scouts to find the ideal location for their new home.
As the scouts return to the swarm -- that brown mass of bees hanging from a tree branch or porch -- they lobby for their choice in an intricate dance. Often, several scouts have found potential new homes, and other workers are recruited to investigate each spot. Each returning bee may dance, and the process continues until they reach consensus and lead the rest of the swarm to the new location. In some ways, they resemble real estate agents convincing prospective buyers to select the location they think is best.
They’re relatively vulnerable during this stage because the queen is with them and they need her to survive the relocation so she can lay eggs once they’ve built enough comb in their new spot. If she doesn’t survive, they’re doomed.
So, what should you do if you find a honey bee swarm?
🐝Don't panic. The first thing people need to do is stay calm and let nature take its course. If you see a swarm of bees hanging in a tree, on a fence post or in a bush, just leave it alone.
🐝Don't spray them with a pesticide. Avoid spraying the bees with pesticide, especially if someone is coming to catch the swarm. Once the bees have been sprayed, a beekeeper will not be able to save them.
🐝Contact your local MSU Extension office. The swarm likely will move on in a matter of hours if the weather is good. However, if you want to get the swarm removed, call your local Extension office to see if they have a list of local beekeepers who are interested in swarm catching.
