I don't have a saddle and haven't for years but haven't been able to justify and save up for the cost. So I've been doing groundwork with my horse for a long time. Ive been trying to train him in a more native American style of training, connecting and bonding with him instead of the western style of breaking a horse I grew up with. Through this process he has never bucked or thrown me intentionally, but it's been slow.
I've been trying to work up to this particular goal for months and it feels so good to have accomplished!! I've been teaching my horse to guide me to his food bowl in hopes that by doing this, I can work up to him letting me jump on his back and taking me to his food bowl. From scratching the base of his tail until he backs up to my hand, leaning all my weight across him every night while he leads me to his bowl. Letting go of him and teaching him to turn back around for me and guide me correctly.
Well this weekend we finally reached my end goal. He now lets me jump on him from my porch with his food bucket, completely ba****ck, no headstall, and will take me to his food bucket and jump off. 🥰 I'm so happy.
So we're getting a saddle this weekend. I've been saving up a little here and there for months. I'm so excited for our progress and stoked that my horsemanship and trusting my gut is paying off. I have the greatest bond with this animal and I'm so grateful.
