Mental illness has officially become the world’s leading cause of disability, surpassing cardiovascular disease, cancer, and musculoskeletal conditions. A 2026 Global Burden of Disease study found more than 1.1 billion people, roughly one in seven worldwide, were living with a mental disorder in 2023, nearly double the number recorded in 1990.

Anxiety and depression are driving most of the increase, with depression cases up 24% and anxiety cases up more than 47% since 2019. Researchers point to pandemic-related stress along with longer-term factors like poverty, insecurity, and declining social connection as underlying causes.

🚒 First Responders: Grief Doesn’t Always Start With a Funeral.

As a grief coach, I want to speak directly to the men and women who serve our communities—firefighters, EMTs, paramedics, police officers, dispatchers, and other first responders.

I come from a family with a deep, lifelong connection to the fire service. My grandfather was Fire Chief of the Rocky Grove Fire Department in Pennsylvania. His son, my uncle, went on to serve as Fire Chief in both Eustis and Lake Mary, Florida. My father was also a volunteer firefighter, and I have many cousins who continue to serve in the fire department.

So I understand that the weight you carry isn't always something you talk about.

Grief doesn't always happen immediately after the death of someone you love.

Sometimes grief builds slowly.

It can come from being exposed, over and over again, to tragedy, trauma, loss, high-stress situations, and things that most people will never have to see.

And sometimes, losing a patient can hurt deeply—even when you did everything you could.

You may find yourself feeling different, more withdrawn, emotionally exhausted, numb, irritable, or simply not quite like yourself anymore.

That doesn't mean you're weak.

It means you're human.

❤️ You don't have to wait until you're completely overwhelmed to ask for support.

Why Consider Grief Coaching?

For some first responders, one of the biggest concerns about seeking help is the fear of being labeled, diagnosed, or having a mental-health diagnosis become part of their professional record.

That concern is real—and it can make someone hesitate to reach out at all.

Grief coaching offers a different path.

Coaching is non-clinical and supportive. It does not diagnose mental health conditions or provide mental health treatment. Instead, coaching can give you a private place to slow down, talk through what you've experienced, identify what you're struggling with, and develop practical ways to move forward.

Some potential benefits of coaching include:

🔥 A confidential place to talk without having to pretend you're okay.

🔥 Support after a difficult call or loss—including the loss of a patient.

🔥 Help making sense of emotions that may have built up over months or years.

🔥 Practical tools for coping with grief and life changes.

🔥 A judgment-free environment where you don't have to be the "strong one."

🔥 Someone in your corner who understands that repeated exposure to loss can take a toll.

🔥 Early support before things become overwhelming.

Most importantly, coaching doesn't require you to be "sick" to deserve support.

You don't need a diagnosis to say, "I'm having a hard time, and I could use some help."

Seeking support isn't a sign that you can't handle the job.

Sometimes it's a sign that you've been handling too much for too long.

And there is strength in recognizing when you need a little TLC, too. ❤️

You spend your career taking care of everyone else. Let someone take care of you for a change.

If you're a first responder—or love someone who is—and you're carrying more than you're comfortable admitting, send me a private message.

🚒 You don't have to carry it alone.

Coaching is non-clinical support and is not a substitute for mental health therapy, diagnosis, or emergency care. If you are experiencing a mental health crisis or believe you may be a danger to yourself or someone else, please seek appropriate professional help immediately.
