🍄🌳 Nature’s giants don’t live forever.
The legendary Major Oak of Sherwood Forest—an oak believed to be over 1,000 years old and tied to the folklore of Robin Hood—has died after years of decline. Experts point to a combination of drought, heat stress, soil compaction from millions of visitors, and age.
One detail that caught our attention: the tree’s famous hollow trunk was created by fungi over time. While fungi are often misunderstood as something that only causes decay, they are also a vital part of the forest ecosystem—recycling nutrients, creating habitat, and helping forests renew themselves.
Even in death, the Major Oak will continue supporting wildlife and countless fungi for years to come. 🍄❤️
Rest easy, old giant. 🌳
