World Bee Day
May 20, 2023

Many years ago Marla Spivak from the University of Minnesota gave the honey bee the moniker of “Super Organism” which means that while they are individual insects, their survival depends upon the entire group of individuals functioning together as a single organism if you will. Most of the bee species are not social and are solitary bees that carry on their species-specific genetics from year to year and do help a bit with their pollination efforts. Honey bees are the most beneficial of bees are social insects that have unique characteristics that benefit and help guarantee their survival but benefit the world that we share with their pollination efforts. It is estimated that about a third of the food we eat is made possible by their efforts and much of this is the enjoyable part of our diet in the fruits and vegetables that add taste and variety to our diet. World Bee Day is coming up on May 20th and it is a day that we should take a moment to be thankful for all of these wonderful pollinators that make the world a better place. Years ago I added to Marla’s description of the honey bee with the addition of the word “Symbiotic” Super Organisms as they do no harm to their environment and in so many ways better the world both we and they live in making food and perpetuating the wonderful flowers around us! As such they are good examples for us to live by as well!
