Since purchasing their farm in 2011, we implemented several soil health practices including rotational and bale grazing, pasture improvements, bee lawn, & more.

Here is a glimpse into our setup for moving cattle from one field or pasture to another.

Left to Right -

✔️Our truck and trailer is backed up to our chute. They have both seen better days, but still safe and functional. Farm truck seems to live on forever I guess.
✔️Our chute is an Arrowquip 7408 shoot is portable and worth every stinking penny. Its fairly easy to set up and take down, and keeps everyone (cattle and humans) safe. This chute has allowed our kids to continue to be involved, learning, and safe through the whole process. Its also worth noting that working cattle in the fall with this shoot is down to just Peter and the vet in about 2 hours.
✔️Next is our portable corral panels. These are from a place by Wykoff. You can't move them by hand, but they are pretty sturdy and move around easily with the loader tractor.
✔️Last is a few sort sticks, 2 halters for some pesky 4H calves, and a pail of corn for bribery.

All things considered its a pretty simple setup and can be moved just about anywhere.

Would love to hear if someone has a portable setup hack they find particularly useful.

We're excited to announce the 2026 MNGLCA Grazing Mentorship Program is officially open for registration!

This six-month program pairs Minnesota livestock producers one-on-one with experienced local grazers who understand adaptive grazing management, soil health, and conservation-focused livestock systems. It runs April 1 – October 1, 2026, and is open to beginners, transitioning grazers, and conventional farmers considering livestock integration.

As a mentee, you'll receive:
— Monthly check-ins with your mentor
— An on-farm site visit
— A 2-year MNGLCA membership
— Free access to our Grazing School or a MNGLCA Field Day
— Planning tools & peer support
— Potential $500 completion mini-grant (select regions)

Mentors receive a $300 stipend per mentee depending on regional funding.

Peter Desens and I got the opportunity to test an automatic gate opener. We found it useful for helping us AMP graze our cattle in a timely and effective manor even with our busy full lives!

Ideally you would be there to move the cattle and open the gate at the exact time the grass said the cows need to be moved. Where it came in the most handy was on days where we checked in the mornings, and cattle would be best to be moved at say 5pm...but there is art camp, wrestling, and grocery pickup all at that time too....Or county fair show Day.

Making soil health practices work in our real life and operation has been the biggest key to our success. We definitely will be picking up a couple to use .

Zane Merrill did an amazing job updating the end of our garage with a new door that goes all the way to the ground. (You all know this farm girl's dream is shed doors that close all the way down to keep the birds/critters out!!)

We still have painting to do on the exterior as well as all the inside finish work Peter Desens and I are doing ourselves.

This project is definitely coming along nicely!
