🌽 Knee-high by the Fourth of July?

That old saying has been around for generations, and so far, it looks like our corn might just make it! 🌱

Of course, Mother Nature always gets the final say, but we’ll call this one a “to be continued…” and check back in on the Fourth. 🇺🇸😄

Will it be knee-high? Stay tuned!

Last year, these 120 acres were corn. This spring, they got a fresh start as hay ground. After spreading manure to recycle nutrients back into the soil, we plowed the fields and picked plenty of rocks (a never-ending job around here!). 😉

Next, we made one pass with our high-speed disc to level and prepare the seedbed, followed by a cultipacker to firm the soil. We then seeded the field with an air-flow seeder and made another pass with the Brillion cultipacker to ensure good seed-to-soil contact. Finally, we rolled the fields with a smooth roller to put the finishing touches on them and create a smooth surface for future hay harvests. 🌱🚜

Establishing a new hay field takes a lot more than simply spreading seed. The extra steps we take now help set these fields up for several years of productive growth. 👊🏻

🐄 Fun Farm Fact Friday! 🐄

Have you ever wanted to “adopt” a calf… without having to build a pen in your backyard? 😄

The Discover Dairy Adopt a Calf program is a FREE educational experience for classrooms across the country. Throughout the school year, students follow the journey of a real dairy calf and learn all about how she grows, what she eats, and what life is like on a dairy farm.

No feed bills, no early morning chores, and no need to convince Mom and Dad to let you bring a calf home! 😉 Just learning made fun and a way to connect students with agriculture.

Teachers: Enrollment for the upcoming school year is now open! Check out the program and sign up at Discover Dairy’s Adopt a Cow program:

🚨 Myth Busting Monday 🚨

❌ Myth: “Those cows are too skinny! You can see the bones on their backs.”

✅ Fact: What many people are noticing are a dairy cow’s pin bones and hip bones, which are naturally more visible than in beef cattle. Dairy cows are built differently and have a much leaner body type. 🐄

A healthy dairy cow should have some definition in these areas. In fact, body condition is something we monitor closely because cows that are too thin or too heavy can have health and reproduction problems. Just like people, every cow has a different frame and body type, but visible pin bones do not automatically mean a cow is underweight.

What some people see as “skinny,” veterinarians, nutritionists and dairy farmers recognize as a normal body shape for a healthy, well-cared-for dairy cow. 🐄🥛
