Growing Roots Farm

Growing Roots Farm After a lifetime of military service (50 years combined), we're finally growing roots!

Our little farm supports our journey to create a homestead-like lifestyle. It felt good to settle...but each day gets even better as our roots start to take hold.

I got got.

A lot.

Monday was rough.

Nearly 20 bee stings in my face, neck and head.

My honeybees got inside the hood of my bee suit.

The pain and swelling have subsided.

But the trauma has continued as that afternoon replays in my head over and over.

In hindsight, I messed up.

I was calm though.

When the first bee was crawling up my nostril, I stayed calm.

And then when the next one crawled toward my eye, I gently closed my eyes.

I started to walk away slowly.

But in my mind I was panicking.

I saw more bees all over my hood.

I figured they were getting inside from a tear or gaping hole.

And that’s when I really screwed up.

I took off my glove so I could unzip my hood and get them out.

Once my hood was off, it was on.

They attacked my head and everything felt like it was in slow motion.

Painful stings in my nose, my cheeks and my neck.

There was no one to help me.

I just wanted to lie down in the driveway.

But I took off my suit. And my boots.

Then my shirt because they were now in there too.

Then hunched over in only my shorts and socks I made my way up to the house.

It seemed like it took forever.

I am sure I scared the crap out of our girls because I was screaming and sobbing by then.

The bees were in my hair.

I couldn’t get to them and they were stinging my scalp.

It hurt so freaking bad.

My girls helped me get the last bees out of my hair.

They made me a cold compress to start cooling the swelling before Mark took me to the ER.

I looked hideous.

Felt worse.

What did I do wrong?

Pretty sure my top Velcro wasn’t secured enough for the protective, honey harvest aggressive natured hive.

And a few got in.

But today, I went back out.

With Mark.

It was scary.

But a strip of duck tape helped ease my fear.

I’m not completely over this.

But it was a good start.
