Here's Kelly demonstrating how to get chaga off the trunk of a birch! (And his happy chaga dance.)

From a distance, chaga can look like a birch burl. On the inside though, burls will always resemble wood, with growth rings, swirls, etc. Chaga, on the other hand, will be bright orange with a texture similar to cork, and should come off with one clean hit with a handaxe. Remember, always leave some chaga behind to recolonize the tree. And if a chaga is black on the inside, move on! Chaga can only remain sterile and safe if it's attached to a living tree. Dead chaga is likely contaminated with mycotoxins. Forage with care!
