As the summer keeps moving our harvest keeps growing in quantity, keeping us busier and busier! This past week we have been busy getting our combine out for wheat harvest, planting new pasture that has just started to sprout, and maintaining the health of our plants. Our golden acre cabbage (shown in second picture) along with kale, broccoli, and green beans have been increasing in production! Our peas and collard greens are producing nicely as well!

We have had lots of folks asking this year about what we are doing in the field north of the house. Well, we are in the beginning stages of putting in a u-pick orchard. We will have apples, pears, peaches, apricots, raspberries, and black berries to start off with. Hopefully we can get the rest of it planted out this fall and next spring. Stay tuned!

Part 2!

So, is this event for you or how can you participate? This is for you if you are looking to learn about raising good, clean food and the details to doing so, to get away and be inspired, to find your place in the food system, to learn so you can teach. If you are unable to do the trip, there is another way you can participate. Several of you have asked how you can be more involved. What about helping offer a scholarship to someone that needs it to attend. What about sending someone that you know, who could benefit and then be able to leverage this experience to share with others in your community. Being part of that which is larger than each of us is what will move this forward.

So, to that end, we have attached a couple of information sheets to this email. Take a look and if you wish to reserve your spot, send back the form and payment and we will add you to the list. We are limiting the attendance to 30 as that will still make it intimate enough to be able to share with everyone. This will be as hands on an experience as we can make it. We promise to be as transparent as we can with all of our information, sharing our own struggles as well as the triumphs. Our motto here at the farm has become “ we are learning to fail better”! Additionally, Marty has written and published a guide book entitled, “My Farmer, My Customer”, available from Acres USA. That information is attached as well. So, if this sounds like you, come join us! Let us know if you have questions.

We look forward to having you visit this summer!
Be well and take care,
Marty and Will Travis

2 Posts coming here!!!

Happy Spring Season friends!

We are sending this note to a large group of you who have written to us over the last year or so following your viewing of the documentary, Sustainable. So many of you have sent such heart-felt and passionate emails. They have moved and inspired us. Thank you for that! Also, many, many of you have asked to learn more, visit or become involved in some way to help forward this idea of good food and good farmers. With this email from us, we want to share an event that we will host in June. This will be a follow up event to ones we hosted in 2018, 2019 and 2020 called Down 2 Earth at Spence Farm. With so much having changed in the last year, we have a LOT of new information and opportunities to share.

Down 2 Earth is a two day intensive workshop that focuses on as much practical knowledge as we can share in those two days, relating to every aspect of farming and creating community. Following the documentary, we received so many emails from friends like you all over the world. Many wrote while watching the film, some with tear-filled eyes, some with a burning desire to be a part of something larger or just needing to connect. Many had questions on how to begin farming, how to create cooperative groups of farmers, how to be an advocate or enabler. We tried our best to respond to each email with appreciation and encouragement. As time went, though, we found those themes were recurring over and over. So, for the last few summers we tried out our workshop on folks who traveled from around the U.S. and Canada. It went really well. We are now ready to offer our farm for that program again this summer. The dates are Friday and Saturday, June 25 and 26.

Wow! THANK YOU to everyone who donated to our partnered community project with @realgoodstuffco. Because of your generosity we were able to donate $2,400 worth of product to the Boys and Girls Clubs in the south side communities of Chicago. This will help feed the children and families affected during this time. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. ❤

New podcast alert! Listen to farmer and author Marty Travis discuss farming during a time of pandemic. Marty leads a co-op of farmers that serves some of the top restaurants in the Chicago area. Many of those restaurants went into hibernation during the outbreak, but they didn’t forget about Marty’s group. The chefs put out the word that there was plenty of fresh food for sale. The demand from families was so high that the co-op saw a big spike in its usual revenue. And even though he had barely slept a wink when we talked to him this month, Marty was still finding time to offer farmers words of encouragement. #tractortime #podcast #coronavrus #martytravis

Hello Friends,
Our world has changed fast these last few days and we are all looking for some certainty and assurance that we will be able to take good care of ourselves, our families and our community. To that end, we have been planning and working towards some options for our community. As many of you may know, Spence Farm is part of a much larger group of local farms that works cooperatively to offer their products to individuals and restaurants in Chicago as well as several downstate communities. We have been planning for some time on ways of expanding production in order to make all of these great products available to Central Illinois families.

Beginning this week, we would like to offer a good portion of our inventory to our local communities on a broader scope. Our typical system of ordering involves sending a list of available product each Friday evening and receiving orders via email from our customers. Our order deadline is Monday at noon. All of our farms deliver then to our farm and orders are consolidated and then sent out. What we would propose is having pick up hours at Spence Farm Wednesday from 4 to 6 pm. Local folks will be sent an email invoice that can be paid online and then just pick up their ordered product. Easy! Our extensive list of products includes everything from vegetables, mushrooms, grains, flour, honey, meats, eggs, syrup and fish. All of this is produced by our group of over 50 local farms. This is a way of everyone supporting each other. With spring fast approaching, our list will expand dramatically! If you are interested in participating in this weekly offering, please email Marty at [email protected]. and ask to be added to the list.

We hope that this may be a way to add some control into all of our lives during this time when things seem a bit bonkers. Please let us know if you have any questions. We look forward to serving you!
