Sad News: If you have been following our farm for a while, you most definitely have heard a few Martha, the chicken stories. Out of all the chickens we have had over the past 8 years, Martha has been the most unique. We raised her as a standard 4H chick project and she was nothing extraordinary. She looked exactly like her 5 sisters (regular yellow chick) that turned into a normal white chicken with a red comb.

But…I quickly learned this ordinary chicken would soon be both the bane of my existence and one of the animals I looked forward to seeing the most every day. Martha kept me on my toes. She was the champion of hiding eggs for me to find. Some of her favorite places were in the ditch across the road, under our porch steps (over 50 smelly eggs 🙄), and inside the ditch culvert. Eventually I learned that Martha just needed a “special” place to lay her eggs. Every morning she would follow me around the farm until I opened the barn door for her to find her favorite place to lay her egg-my grandma’s old wash tub. She continued to lay in this place most of the time.

Martha went to 4 county fairs with us earned herself Reserve Champion and several blue and purple ribbons, but again she never did things the normal way. One year while being judged, she laid her egg right in the judge’s hand 😂 And he commented that he never saw a face as perfect as hers in the leghorn breed. That day she went from ordinary chicken to queen status. 👑

And if you want to know how she passed, it was because of her unique way of doing things. Martha didn’t drink out of the waterer like other chickens. She drank out of the alpaca water tub like she has been for her whole life. Unfortunately she must of slipped or got bumped and fell in. Martha didn’t know how to swim.

If you’ve read this far, you know how special Martha was and she probably deserves her own children’s book about all her adventures. The farm will not be the same without her and I will definitely miss Martha! ❤️🐓

Jupiter and Atlas are off to new adventures. Last night we said goodbye as they moved to their new home in southern Iowa. Their new family has alpaca experience and a small herd that Atlas and Jupiter will fit nicely with. I am so happy these boys got to go together 🥰 One or both will become their new herd’s future herd sire. 🌙❤️🦙
