Our new flock is settling in well to the pasture routine, enjoying unlimited bugs, grass, fresh air and sunshine!

Getting a new flock means taking time to do a few key training steps to get the birds used to our system. Here are the birds after getting forced out of the coops for the first time. They will start to explore the whole paddock eventually but at first hang close to the coops.

1) Keep the birds locked in the coops for 2-3 full days. This ensures they all understand the coop is home base and understand that’s where food and water are.

2) Before letting them outside, set up skirt fencing so that they cannot go under the coop. This makes the dusk training much much easier.

3) Open the coop doors, hardly any chickens will venture out so they have to be pushed out. Best to have a partner for this one and lots of patience 😅 This will ensure they all understand they can come and go from the coops as they please and will need to be repeated several times but gets easier each time

4) For the next 3-4 evenings be sure to go right at dusk and help any stragglers get in the coops. Once it is too dark they won’t move on their own and you will end up carrying loads of them back to the coop for the night. Usually by night 3 they will all have gone in on their own!

Busy week prepping for our new flock arriving! Getting the coops moved out of winter housing, cleaned and doing general maintenance that is tough to do while they are in use, moving the coops out to pasture, moving our 1300 new pullets that arrived from PA into the coops and catching/loading up the old flock to go back to PA with our pullet grower. We even had time to seed and mulch around their winter housing 😅

There will be a short lapse in eggs at our partner stores but the new girls are already laying and you can expect our eggs to back in full force soon, we appreciate your support and patience during the transition!
