DAY 13,708 On the Land w/ Cattle (12/8/25): Another 4 inches of snow today and the moisture is welcome, but paired with nights in the teens. This earlier than normal, harsh winter means our feeding strategies follow the weather’s lead. Calves were weaned in late October, and since then we’ve focused on “plumping up” the mommas. We NEVER let cows enter winter with low body scores because that’s a lose-lose situation, especially when it comes to the following years herd performance and takes a long time to fix.
Ahead of storms, we feed surplus hay and watch the herd closely: gut fill, hair coat, fat reserves, even their movements and voices. Do they rush to new pasture or bawl for hay, or wait calm and quiet? Reading cattle tells us everything.
How we steward them now this winter shapes spring calving and summer lactation. Excellence is expected every year, and winter care sets the stage. Keep those girls FAT, FULL, and FED!
