Shared…. This is why having a good, accurate incubator is so important with Call Duck eggs. I had more than one customer this season tell me, “I hatch chickens all the time in it”.
Another persons incubator was 10 degrees off!
These eggs are expensive, so use good incubators!
This is why hatching call ducks is stressful. This is why they cost more.
This incubator has been set at 100° because set at 100° it was reading 99.5° - 99.8° which is right where I want it. It has been set at that temp for the whole season without any issues.
However. When I candled my most recent batch I had eggs with blood rings and eggs with no development that were from pens with proven 100% development. Thats a major problem.
So I threw in my thermometer and it was almost 101°
Set it down to 99.5° (only goes in .5 increments) and it is sitting barely above 99.
With other breeds, these temps wouldn't be that big of a deal. With call eggs though, its detrimental. I lost almost an entire batch of eggs because if this.
