Willow Update 🤍

To know me is to know Willow.

For eight years, this yellow girl has been my shadow, my constant, my best friend. She is woven into every part of my life, and I know so many of you here have come to know and love her too. I’ve been quiet about what has been happening because, honestly, I’m still trying to process it all.

On Saturday, July 25, I got home from a barrel race with Addie and was sitting on the floor playing with Harper when Willow crawled into my lap.

She looked miserable.

There was nothing dramatic that I could point to, but something in me said, Get her to the vet. Now.

By some miracle, our local vet was able to see her at 4:00 on a Saturday afternoon. After abdominal X-rays and bloodwork, they told me she needed a higher level of care immediately.

So I left with literally the shirt on my back and headed for CSU.

I had already driven four hours that day for the barrel race. I was exhausted, still in the same clothes, 2½ hours from home, with nothing packed and absolutely sick with worry about my girl.… (continued in comments)

One thing I've learned over the years is that horses thrive on consistency.

Addie and Dude have developed a pre-race routine that they stick to before every single run. It gives Addie confidence knowing she's done everything she can before they ever run into the arena, and I think Dude appreciates the consistency too.

Part of that routine is six Purina® Outlast® Treats about 30 minutes before every run. They include Outlast® Gastric Support Supplement to support gastric health and comfort through the stress of travel and competition, which is something that's important to me as we haul and compete throughout the summer.

I always tell my kids that we can't control everything when running a horse —but we can control how we prepare and how we care for our horses before and after the race. Supporting Dude's gastric health is important to us because we want him feeling his best every time we ask him to compete.

County Fair Recap—Part 1 of 3:
The David & Arthur Edition 🤍

I knew I had to start with these two because Arthur quickly became a fan favorite…and honestly, I’m not sure my heart is ready to write this one.

Our first steer project.

And goodness…what a journey it was.
No one warned me just how much crap comes along with showing a steer. Chutes. Lights. Tents. Feed. Bedding. Fans. Buckets. And somehow, it all has to be moved in…and then right back out again.

But somewhere in the middle of all that work, we made new friends, learned more than we ever expected, and watched a boy and his steer become one incredible team.
Arthur was an absolute CHAMP.

He handled the noise, crowds, and chaos of fair with so much ease and grace. He trusted David completely, and it was obvious how much time and effort David had poured into him over the last several months.

They were simply awesome together.
David placed 4th in showmanship. There is room to improve, but he walked out of that ring knowing he had left nothing undone.
Arthur also placed 4th in his market heat—right behind the Grand and Reserve Grand Champion steers.

Another huge highlight came at the sale. Because of David’s hard work marketing Arthur, talking with buyers, making connections, and sharing his story, Arthur was the highest-selling steer at the fair.
And I could not be more proud.

David learned that effort matters. Relationships matter. Showing up matters. And sometimes the work you put in long before anyone is watching makes the biggest difference.

Now comes the part I knew would be hard…but I don’t think either of us understood just how hard.

The last two days have felt very empty.
David misses Arthur. I miss Arthur.

We miss the chores, the feeding, the walks, the fitting, and simply having that big fluffy boy waiting for us every day.

This project asked a lot of David and our whole family. But honestly, it gave us even more.

Arthur, you were the very best first steer a kid could ask for. You taught David responsibility, patience, hard work, confidence, and how deeply we can love an animal entrusted to our care.

We will miss you more than words can say.

It’s County Fair season all across America…

And I have a feeling there are a whole lot of moms who need to hear this.

I see you.

Horse show moms. Livestock moms. Rodeo moms.

It’s a lot.

Our kids get to enjoy the magic because we quietly carry so much behind the scenes.

And maybe that’s exactly how it’s supposed to be.

One day they’ll understand everything it took to get them here. But for now…they just get to be kids.

I think that’s the greatest gift we can give them.

Now get some sleep. It’s a busy week ♥️

It’s officially County Fair week.

The end of a 10-month journey for David’s very first 4-H steer project, Arthur.

To say I’m starting to get a tad weepy is an understatement.

Our last Friday night chores. Our last fitting at home. Our last evening walk to the barn. Our last feed together before we load up and head to the fair. Somehow, all of those “lasts” are sneaking up on me.

And then I always get the comments…
“I don’t know how you do it.”
“I could never say goodbye.”

The truth is…I’m no different. This is hard stuff.

It’s not easy spending every single day with a big fluffy boy who has become part of our family, only to know the journey is coming to an end this week.

But THIS is why we do it. Not because it’s easy. Because it’s meaningful.

Because somewhere between the early mornings, the daily feedings, the brushing and baths, the setbacks, the small victories, and the quiet moments in our little barn…a kid grows up.

Responsibility like this can’t be taught in a lecture by Matt or I …. It’s earned before the rest of the house gets up and after dinner every night. David didn’t miss a beat. He just did it.

The older these kids get, the more I realize that work ethic isn’t something you talk about. It’s something you have to live to truly learn.

Compassion, patience, resilience, pride in doing a job well, showing up even when you’re tired…those lessons are learned with a halter in one hand and a feed bucket in the other.

Arthur has given David so much more than a steer project. He’s given him confidence. He’s taught him to put someone else’s needs before his own. He’s shown him that the best things in life are worth working for. I could go on and on.

Ag kids really are different. Not because they’re born that way, but because they’re raised this way.

And this…this is why we’ll keep choosing the hard things. Because I could never recreate what Arthur has taught my boy.

Only agriculture could do that.
Only a steer named Arthur could do that❤️
