Friday Field Focus… pumpkins??
Yes. Pumpkins.
Last year, we “grew” pumpkins.
The kids picked the varieties, sowed the seeds, checked on them daily for weeks, tracked their progress in a journal. And then in one night the deer ate them. All. I hesitated to let the kids go check on them, worried they would notice and be so upset. I even considered placing pumpkins purchased from another farm and pretend they grew them. In the end we discussed what happened and made a plan for next year.
This year we are growing pumpkins.
The kids were excited to try again and we had our plan. Which essentially was the same, but we started the seeds indoors and we built a makeshift fence together around their coveted pumpkins.
Seeing their faces and hearing the squeals when they ran to check them this week was a parenting win. Even if we don’t get actual pumpkins for each of them this year, the joy was worth it.
It reminds me to be excited about every seed that turns into a beautiful flower. Here’s to persevering, finding joy, and trying to win the battle against the deer!
And yes, I will keep you posted on the pumpkin progress!
