I mentioned yesterday that we were busy busy busy on the farm this weekend- but tonight is the first chance I've had to tell y'all about it. So it's been a minute since I came up with a lesson from the farm, not really since i been sober, so let's see where this goes-
Today's farm lesson is "do the evening check"
I knew it was gonna be busy cuz I'd rented a mini excavator for the weekend. I spent friday helping a friend process 50 quail AND finally fixed Karen's sink! It's broke again BUT it's broke in a new place now- i swear I'll fix it.... soon.
Saturday morning started off with a doe (goat) finally delivering her babies during the night- she gave us a beautiful set of M/F twins! WOOT! (she had been faking us out for 2 weeks then finally delivered.... on her due date)
Pick up the mini ex--- you are not gonna believe how cute this thing is!! It's TINY and you sit up high on it but the seat and controls are low so it looks and feels like your driving a tonka toy! Get it home and get to work! Work till dark (the barn was NASTY!) .
Saturday night when I did evening checks on them- the doe was clearly favoring the boy over the girl (I know! Yep- goats do mommys boy too!) It was going to be very cold last night so I brought the girl in for the night. I do this often and I give the baby frozen colostrum overnight, I expect mom to be willing to take care of them after 1 night separation and they usually do. She did. So today I WORK! I'm using that little dirt digging tonka toy to dig every hole i could possibly want on my property and bury a bunch more!
Tonight- I do evening check. It's COLD out there!! I'm tired! Momma goat has left the little BOY on the back porch!! (Guess she decided she'd keep the mommys girl!) And she took the little girl into the least populated shed and stood looking down at her shiver!!!
So I had to pull both babies tonight. :( Mom's mad but I know when she gets cold she'll go back to the warm shed and forget about those babies till morning!
So today's lesson is: " Do the evening check" even if it's just opening the back door and listening for a problem. I used to be really good about that- I'd do the checks EVERY NIGHT but as I've gotten older and more sober I find more parts of me hurt in the evenings. I don't even remember to lean out the back door and listen most nights anymore. But I should- that's how I catch things like babies left alone in the cold on the back porch step-.... I mean really? and she swapped the favorite baby to boot!
