👀 NOSEY NEIGHBOR BREAKDOWN:
Massachusetts has a bill, H.1924, that deals with postpartum psychosis in criminal cases.
And no it does NOT mean “a mother can kill her kids and just walk free.”
The point is to figure out whether she knowingly committed murder… or whether she was so mentally ill from postpartum psychosis that she could not understand what she was doing was wrong or could not control her actions.
If she meets that very high legal standard, she could be found not criminally responsible and committed to a psychiatric hospital instead of prison.
If she was mentally ill but still legally responsible, the illness could still be considered when it comes to sentencing or resentencing.
Basically: the bill is about making sure postpartum psychosis is actually evaluated instead of treating every case like the mental illness didn’t matter. 👀
