2026 Bull Run
We hit the road to see some of the programs we’ve long admired. Spring Cove Ranch and Sitz Angus Ranch.
These operations share something we believe in. Breeding long-lasting beef cattle that work in the real world. Maternal traits, longevity, and cattle built for the West, especially for environments like ours and our customers’ in Nevada.
We wanted to see the cattle in person. Walking through hundreds of bulls, appraising them visually, seeing many of the mothers behind the Sitz offering. That’s the kind of education you can’t get from a catalog. Sitz has been a pioneer in PAP testing, and that matters to anyone running cattle at elevation.
The market confirmed what we already believed. Spring Cove’s lead-off bull brought $220,000 and multiple bulls at Sitz eclipsed $100,000. Demand for cattle built to last is as strong as ever.
What stood out most is that these cattle mirror the type and kind we’re building at Rafter 9. Phenotypically, our base matches up. That tells us we’re headed in the right direction.
We’re coming home with a renewed commitment. Provide the best set of bulls we can to our customers. Bulls that last. Bulls that work. When our customers’ cattle hold up longer and perform in tough country, they’re more successful. That’s the whole point.
David also visited with Gem State Angus, a longtime Idaho breeder and fellow consigner at the Great Basin Bull Sale. Every conversation on this trip reinforced the same thing. Produce honest cattle that work in the real world.
Traveling is the greatest education. Grateful to Art at Spring Cove, Jim at Sitz, and Kevin at Gem State for the time and hospitality.
