Saturday Dec 17 is our LAST MARKET OF 2022, let's make it a party! We're having an Ugly Sweater Contest for our vendors, vote for your favorite, the winner gets a cash prize! There will be so much going on this day! Our holiday-decorated old red farm truck will be parked at Court & High streets for free holiday photo ops starting at 9AM. Yoga in the Courtyard starts at 9AM (most likely inside Trinity Church), the Children's Museum of Virginia opens at 9AM, the Portsmouth Olde Towne Farmers Market starts at 10AM along with book signing by Portsmouth Author Allie Marie, a Friends of the Portsmouth Public Library Book Sale, and Brunch with Santa at Cure Coffeehouse. A Children's Chorus will be singing at Olde Towne Arts and Music at 10:30AM (but we suspect they will visit the Farmers Market, too) and there will be seasonal hands-on art activities at That Art Store! Expect visits from time travelers from Mary Veale and the Colonials, and there's a pretty good chance we might see The Grinch skulking through! At 11AM at the Portsmouth Public Library (601 Court Street) you'll have Storytime with Mrs. Claus, and pictures with Santa begin at 11:30! At 12 Noon the Winter Wonderland (The Coleman Nursery Collection) opens at the Portsmouth Art & Cultural Center. Our shops & restaurants along High Street and the cross streets will have special sales & meal features, and the holiday spirit will definitely be in the air! You can also sign up for Candlelight Caroling at 5PM, and walk the streets of Olde Towne Portsmouth, VA.

Something a bit different! I came across this novelty bottle of OLD MONK rum and had to get it. I've never had Indian Rum before, and both the bottle and the price said I should try. Though the monk's head keeps popping off the bottle. Stayed on for the picture, though!

It has lots of caramel on the nose, other than a bit of alcohol that's pretty much what I get. Dark amber color. More caramel and brown sugar notes on the palate, along with alcohol. Goes into a short finish with a bit of dark fruit notes. Drinks like higher than it's 80 proof.

For cocktails, once I tasted it, I thought 'a good rum and coke rum' and it is! The flavors pair very well and it makes a good one.

I went full southern tonight for dinner, a baked North Carolina sweet potato ( the best!) And Edwards county ham ( the best!) on rye with Dijon mustard and Fresh Crunch Pickles habanero dill pickles😋

So, there are a couple of small businesses that I shop with frequently that use loyalty punch cards, and as a customer, I LOVE THEM! (Hunger, Fresh Crunch Pickles...I'm looking at y'all 👀)

I figured, if I like this program so well as a customer, wouldn't MY customers appreciate it, also? Let's find out.
I'm excited to introduce our new customer loyalty cards! Punch your way to a free 8oz Mason Jar or Large Tin candle! Here's the details:

-Earn a punch for every full-price candle purchase, any size (punches are NOT valid on market special/sale items or wax melts)
-Valid on in-person sales ONLY

That's it. Pretty simple.
I may consider a wax melt loyalty card at some point, as well as a points enrollment for my online shoppers; BUT, let me kick it to you 100... The online points are definitely easy to use and keep track of, for both online and in-person shoppers, BUT those programs require a fee for small businesses to utilize them. Honestly, I'm fee'd out. You would clutch your pearls at how many 'fees' us small business owners incur on a monthly basis 🙃

Experiment #3 of the week!

Matt from and I wanted to test out his pickles in the freeze-dryer! Took about 50 hours to freeze-dry. We taste tested the variety this morning and man were they good!! My faves were his onions and carrots! His recipes are amazing and their freeze-dried version is off the charts delish. Potential collab in the future maybe….We had so much fun with this experiment!
