🐾 National Dog Day… a day late! 🐾

We may have missed National Dog Day by a day, but around here every day is a good day to celebrate the dogs that make our lives better.

From loyal farm companions to beloved family members, dogs have a way of making every day a little brighter. ❤️

We’re especially thankful for our Australian Shepherds here at Queen City Farm. They aren’t just beautiful dogs, they’re our partners on the farm, our adventure buddies, and most importantly, cherished members of our family. We take pride in raising puppies with stable temperaments, sound health, and the confidence to thrive in their future homes.

Whether your best friend is an Aussie, or not, we’d love to see them!

📸 Drop a photo of your dog in the comments and tell us their name. Let’s celebrate all the good boys and girls, even if we’re a day behind! 🐶💙

For those of you near us, or within reasonable travel distance of us, we have about 50 golden comet layers looking for new homes! And we have some Rhode Island Red chickens who are about 11 months old as well available!

They just started laying, are great layers, and will lay great for several years. Just reducing the number we have, because 9 dozen eggs a day is a bit ridiculous if you are not taking them to markets 😆

A little update from Queen City Farm ❤️

After a full season of selling meat at farmers markets, we’ve made the difficult decision to step away from selling pastured meat directly to the public.

This decision didn’t come lightly. We’ve spent a lot of time looking back at the season, the hours involved, and what we want our life and farm to look like going forward. While we know there are different strategies we could try and ways we could continue to grow this side of the farm, we’ve realized that the time and effort it requires simply isn’t giving us the return that makes sense for our family.

More importantly, it’s taking away something we can’t get back — our time.

At the heart of it, our Australian Shepherd program and farming because we genuinely love it are where we want to put our energy. With our first baby arriving soon, we want our weekends to be spent together as a family, not constantly preparing for and attending markets.

So going forward, we’ll be returning to raising livestock primarily for ourselves, our family, and our friends. From time to time, we may also have whole or half animals available (since we are keeping all of our current livestock!), but we will no longer be regularly stocking or selling individual cuts of meat at farmers markets.

That doesn’t mean you’ve seen the last of the farm, though! One of our favorite parts of this entire journey has been sharing farm life with all of you through social media, and we absolutely plan to continue doing that. The animals, projects, successes, failures, chaos, and everyday life here will still be shared just like always. ❤️

We are incredibly grateful to every single person who bought from us, stopped by our booth, shared our posts, told a friend about us, or supported what we were building. We learned so much this season, met some wonderful people, and we’re genuinely glad we gave it a shot.

Sometimes growing means doing more, and sometimes it means realizing what matters most and choosing to do less.

Queen City Farm isn’t going anywhere. We’re just choosing to make it a little more ours again. ❤️

We finally reached the point where it made sense to switch our sheep over to round hay bales. It’s one of those milestones that reminds us the farm is growing. Round bales are huge, have a lot of hay in them, but if the sheep can’t eat them quickly enough they will mold. So now we finally can justify using them!

There’s just one small problem…

We don’t own the equipment to move them yet.

So, for now, Sam is the equipment. 💪😂

Farming is full of moments like this. You solve one problem, and another one pops up. Every step forward seems to come with a new challenge, but that’s just part of building something from the ground up.

Giving up has never been an option. We’ll keep figuring it out, one bale (and sore back) at a time and hope soon we can get a tractor to be able to do it!

“Grass-fed” doesn’t mean what most people think it means.

In fact, every cow and every lamb is grass-fed.

The label that tells you much more is grass-finished.

Grass-fed means the animal consumed grass during its life.

Grass-finished means it remained on forage until harvest rather than being transitioned to grain.

If you’ve never looked for that difference before, you’re not alone.
