Fall is here! We're (obviously) not good at keeping this page up-to-date ... but all's well, and here are a few photos of things we've had coming out of the fields lately. We're happy for the change in pace fall brings - and for the fact that we can actually feel ok about turning on the oven! Lots of delicious things to roast these days.

We're not great at keeping this page up-to-date, but here's a snapshot of what's been coming out of the fields over the past couple of weeks. We're grateful for the change in pace that fall brings -- and for the fact that we can finally feel good turning the oven on to roast some veggies!

We've had a busy month at the farm! Lots is coming out of the fields these days ....crunchy celery and kohlrabi, fragrant basil, cucumbers, beets and greens! Beans are a little on the late side this year but we'll be bringing them to our CSA members very soon.

Tuesday's good news on the farm: Somerville CSA shares are all sold (thanks pals!) AND there's a little sun in the forecast to help dry our soaking fields! It's been a slow start this spring, with regular soaking rains + our heavy soil, but things are looking up. These celery, corn and calendula are some of the many seedlings ready & waiting to get into the field.

We're partnering with our friend Omasombo to grow out some of these Congolese Eggplants for our Asylum Seeker CSA. These are pretty different than the big purple eggplant we'd typically put in our boxes - small, green, shaped like an egg with firmer flesh and a more bitter flavor than the sweet Italian or Asian varieties. They're super popular with West and Central African communities and we're planting some to be sure we include some familiar produce in these donated shares.

These eggplants started out on our germination bench in the last week of February and are now in Omasombo's care until we're ready to plant them out next month.

Huge thanks to the Old Hat CSA members who have contributed to support these donations.

A few days ago we tucked a pile of ginger root pieces into trays full of coconut coir - a light planting medium similar to peat - and tucked them into a very warm, dark room. Hopefully they'll feel like they're in Hawai'i (??) and - surely taking their sweet time - they'll sprout over the next several months. Once they've sent up a few little shoots we'll plant them in the ground in our hoophouse ....and eventually, fingers crossed, we'll all get to taste some tender, pinkish baby ginger! Stay tuned for one of our most popular items from last year's CSA - you should see it in boxes starting in Early September.

This year, we're growing food specifically to donate to our neighbors and community memmbers who have the biggest barriers to climb. Read more about our Asylum Seeker CSA here: www.oldhatfarm.com/blog . We still have a lot to figure out about how this will work, let us know what you think!

Updated Old Hat's profile on Local Harvest, an online directory of CSA programs. Hope it helps connect us to folks in our new Falmouth neighborhood! And with others in York, Portland and Somerville of course. If you were a member last year feel free to leave us a review! We'd love you forever (especially if it was a good one!!) And if you want to join a CSA but our pick-up spots aren't convenient, this is a great place to learn about other options.

Old Hat Farm is a local CSA farm in Falmouth, Maine. LocalHarvest helps you find local, organic, farm-fresh food near you.
