Compared to our commercial potato harvesters, this machine looks pretty tiny 😉

But, it still has a very important job. This week, we are harvesting research plots across our farms, collecting samples and data from trials growing right alongside our commercial potato crop. Some potatoes will be evaluated right away, while others will head into storage so we can continue studying how they perform over time.

It’s a small harvester, but it helps us learn things that can make a difference across thousands of acres.

Not bad for a few rows of potatoes 🌱🥔

to last week, when we had to shut down harvest by noon because it was simply too hot. ☀️🥔

Listen to RDO Farm Regional Director Tom explain how temperatures impact potato quality and storage. This video was shot during last week’s heat, when potato pulp temperatures climbed high enough that we parked the equipment early to protect the crop.

The very next day, rain moved in and kept us out of the field for several days. We’re thankful for the moisture, but we’re also looking forward to the cooler, drier weather in the forecast so we can get back to bringing in the harvest.

That’s the thing about farming … Mother Nature is always in charge. 😊🌦️🥔🚜
