Justo al norte del centro de Dallas hubo un barrio mexicano que a mediados del siglo veinte tenia miles de familias, dos parroquias, escuelas, panaderias, un parque publico y su propio equipo de beisbol. Hoy en su lugar hay condominios de lujo y torres de vidrio. 🏡

Se llamaba Little Mexico. Comenzo a formarse a principios del siglo veinte cuando miles de familias huyeron a Texas escapando de la Revolucion Mexicana. Se asentaron en la parte baja de la ciudad, entre la avenida McKinney y el rio Trinity, en tierras que nadie mas queria por las inundaciones. Levantaron sus propias casas, abrieron abarrotes, fondas, sastrerias, salones de baile. Fundaron la parroquia Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe y la iglesia del Sagrado Corazon. En Pike Park, el corazon del barrio, celebraban el Diez y Seis de septiembre, el Cinco de Mayo y las fiestas de la Virgen de Guadalupe con desfiles y musica hasta el amanecer.

En su apogeo, entre 1930 y 1950, Little Mexico tenia cerca de quince mil habitantes y era el barrio mexicano mas grande de todo el norte de Texas. 🏗️ Pero a partir de los sesenta el desarrollo urbano lo empezo a devorar. La autopista Central Expressway lo corto en dos, los bancos negaron prestamos a las familias mexicanas para reparar sus casas, la ciudad rezonifico las manzanas para uso comercial. Familia por familia fueron desplazadas. Para los anos noventa ya casi no quedaba nada. Solo Pike Park sobrevive, con su placa y con sus veteranos que todavia recuerdan.
