My father in law is a big Rolling Stones fan so it was appropriate that I had "you can't always get what you want" on repeat in my brain as I worked on matching some custom trim in their home. Three hours away from my shop we were able to "get what we need" from the dark corners of the garage and basement including a Sputnik era router, a wicked heavy door on sawhorses, a classic Craftsman table saw and of course some child labor to make the sanding go faster! We swapped in some fresh (and inexpensive) carbide bits and blades and got great results with some classic tools.

Here's another first out of the shop, a queen size headboard. I was presented with a picture of a straight forward white flat panel headboard from a big box store and permission to get creative with it. The end product is a mortise and tenon frame with individual random width vertical boards. The white wash finish tied the headboard in with the rest of the bedroom furniture without masking the character of the wood. Thanks for commenting, liking and sharing! Smooth seas do not make skilled sailors, and easy projects won't advance your skills in the shop. This build was specifically designed by the customer with the legs passing through the shelves. This meant that each shelf had to be slid into place on the leg tubes and then the rebar structure had to be welded around the shelves. A real wrestling match but an awesome result! Here is a project that I had to wait to share until after Christmas. This routed sign was a gift for a proud grandpa who lovingly refurbished the backyard playhouse his daughters used so that it can be enjoyed by his grandchildren. Many years of imaginative play ahead!

Here's a great project from the week before Christmas that got bumped by my son's tic tac toe board. We fabricated these hollow "faux beams" by re-sawing reclaimed dimensional lumber into thinner boards. We mitered and glued the edges to make the corner seam virtually undetectable. This makes for a convincing "beam" look without the weight. Thank you for all the views, likes, comments and shares! Keep them coming and have a great start to 2017!

5:00 on Christmas Eve and I just finished a last minute job that will be a present tomorrow morning. The best part was that this tic-tac-toe board was designed, commissioned and co-built by my 8 year old son for his 5 year old sister. The order came in yesterday, pro bono of course, but since the two of them typically fight over who sits at which seat and who stands where I'm calling this a Christmas miracle! A very Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, peaceful holiday season and prosperous new year to all!

Sometimes you have to do nice things for yourself, especially when you have kind of a crazy idea that you want to experiment with. I wanted a unique countertop for the bank of used cabinets I picked up off Craigslist and this was the end product! We ripped basic 2x4s (some salvage and some new) and glued up a MASSIVE butcher block style blank 28" wide and 16' long. It took 4 of us with 2 glue bottles and 18 clamps (thanks Jay, Kyle and Jackie, plus Uncle Dan for the extra clamps!). After a rough scraping to get rid excess glue we carefully positioned the drum sander at the double door between the two shops and with the help of my dad Ed, Jackie and Ron and some roller stands we fed all 16' of the counter through the sander for multiple passes. Table for 10! Trestle tables are a popular trend and this one is a monstrous example. The top is a spacious 11' by 4' and is a great spot for the whole family spend time together. The finish color is a multi layer combination of a oil/varnish base and two colors of deck stain/weather protection to compliment the chairs that the customer had. Final assembly on this project felt more like building a small timber frame house, I love a good challenge!

When you're getting started in any venture there are a lot of "firsts" and this was one for sure. Instead of starting with an idea, sketch or picture of an item a customer wants, I started with an antique corbel from a porch restoration project. Each corbel has 17 individual components and measured around 16x16 1/2". A big thanks to Jason Waughtel for being a sounding board and co-engineer as we pulled measurements and built jigs to cut "carrots".

Flashback Friday! These decorative grates were my first step from metal repair and strictly functional welding projects to more artistic/stylized projects. MANY little cuts and welds and a whole new appreciation for stained glass artists!

With help from my upholstery assistant (thanks mom!) I took a walk on the softer side. This build was for a long time family friend that wanted a classic footstool as opposed to the modern giants commonly found in stores. The base is solid black walnut with my favorite oil varnish blend and the top is upholstered with fabric ordered to match the chair it now sits in front of.

Barn beam mantles are a great rustic feature. I made this beam using traditional hewing techniques (not just roughing up a beam off a sawmill). This beam started its life as a round basswood log that I hewed as part of a historical society demonstration. Two years baking in the sun and the ultra light basswood makes a great accent. Want to match the trim work around the room or need a historically accurate timber for a restoration? I can make a beam out of any species available in any dimension.
