A little update.
It has been really interesting to see how the area that burned in the grass fire has bounced back with the lovely fall rains. We are also seeing how some birds have been benefitting from having the bare ground. A large flock of around 200 Horned Larks has been feeding in the area this fall, and a couple of Ferruginous Hawks have been observed hunting over it as well. There have also been quite a few Burrowing Owls out this fall, and the flock of Ring-necked Ducks that winter on the reservoir have returned (along with the Mute Swans that really like our reservoir!).

Winter Bird Update!
"During the winter months, a wide variety of waterfowl utilize the ranch’s reservoir. Varying depths of water across the reservoir make it suitable habitat for both dabbling ducks, like Gadwall and American Wigeon, and diving ducks, including Ring-necked Ducks, Bufflehead and Ruddy Ducks. This year, a large flock of Common Mergansers and a few Hooded Mergansers spent much of the winter on the reservoir. Colorful Wood Ducks are sometimes found along the water’s edge, where they keep close to the cover of willows growing along the shore. While Canada Geese are familiar and conspicuous on the reservoir, occasionally a smaller and less common Cackling Goose can be found mixed in with its larger cousins. American Coots, Pied-billed Grebes, Double-crested Cormorants, American White Pelicans and even a few swans round out the long list of waterfowl that make use of this valuable open water habitat during the winter." Autumn on the grasslands is a good time to look for Burrowing Owls, small diurnal owls that inhabit open spaces such as the ranch’s grazing land. As their name implies, Burrowing Owls nest in underground burrows, but they don’t excavate these burrows themselves. Instead, they rely on burrowing mammals, such as ground squirrels, to do the digging for them. Along the eastern edges of the Central Valley, a region that includes the ranch’s grasslands, Burrowing Owls favor the natural, erosion-caused nooks and crannies found in rocky outcroppings of ancient streambanks and other geologic features of the landscape. Burrowing Owls are in steep decline across California, as much of their habitat has been lost or is in danger of being lost to development, and the ranch’s protected hills and grasslands provide critical habitat for this unique and charismatic little owl. What we saw this Spring!

“May on the ranch has seen the return of a large breeding colony of State Threatened Tricolored Blackbirds, several thousand strong. While these blackbirds look quite similar to the more familiar and widespread Red-winged Blackbird, both their voice and behavior are entirely distinct. As colonial breeders, these birds nest in noisy colonies where they raise young deep in sheltering vegetation. On the ranch, Tricolored Blackbirds nest in blackberry thickets along the riparian area, where they build nests, raise young and then move on, all within a short three to four week period. Nearly endemic to California, the majority of the global Tricolored Blackbird population is found in our state, where their numbers have declined drastically in recent decades. Conservation programs and partnerships with farmers, ranchers and land owners have helped this species to hang on, providing critical breeding habitat in places where habitat loss still threatens their survival.” Photo credit and bird update here on the ranch by Siera Nystrom.
