Atwood Farm Belties Atwood Farm Belties consists of a herd of 75 exceptional pedigreed Registered Belted Galloways and focused on breed purity.

We are a US farm registered with the Canadian Galloway Association. Our belties meet the CGA's strict registration requirements.

Video- Here come the girls.

Several farms who have visited have commented on how short and stocky our Belted Galloways are. And these are Belted Galloways with at 12 generation plus clean pedigrees on non Galloway genetics.

Belted Galloways are moderate framed cattle. And when I look at my herd, this is what I feel as though Belted Galloways should look.

All of these cows are just weaning or have weaned their calves and not due to calve again until next March/April.

Atwood Farm Sweet Pea- We would have loved to keep her on our farm but only could keep 4. But we are very excited that she will be headed to a great farm in Canada.

She is a beautiful calf and will be an amazing cow.

Andy and Christina are getting a great one. We are so happy that they are equally excited for her to join their herd.

We would love to see more US and Canadian farms purchase and sell cattle so that we can continue strengthening the genetics and diversify our herds. We have two cows in our herd from Canada and will add more in the future. And this is one of the many ways that we all can protect the purity of this heritage breed.

A Belt Does Not a Belted Galloway Make! 🍀

Just because a cow has a white belt around its middle doesn't automatically make it a Belted Galloway!

Belted Galloways are a distinct Scottish heritage breed, with characteristics that go far beyond their iconic white stripe.

So what makes a Beltie a BELTIE?

🍀 Naturally Polled – Belted Galloways are naturally hornless. Horns and scurs are not part of the breed standard.

🍀 That Distinctive Double Coat – A soft, insulating undercoat beneath a longer, shaggy outer coat. This is one of the breed's defining characteristics and contributes to its remarkable hardiness.

🍀A Broad, Distinctive Head – A wide forehead, low and flat poll, large prominent eyes, broad muzzle, and forward-pointing ears fringed with hair.

🍀Moderate Frame & Traditional Beef Conformation – Deep-bodied, well-sprung ribs, strong level topline, substantial muscling, and a balanced, proportionate appearance. Bigger isn't necessarily better!

🍀 Short, Strong Legs & Sound Feet – Sturdy bone structure, good feet, and correct movement are important characteristics of the breed.

🍀Black, Red, or Dun – Yes, Belted Galloways come in THREE recognized colors!

🍀The Famous White Belt – A complete white belt encircling the middle is the preferred marking, but the exact shape and width of the belt do not determine the quality of the animal.

🍀 Calm Temperament & Maternal Ability – Quiet dispositions, ease of calving, and strong mothering ability are desirable breed characteristics.

🍀Hardiness & Efficiency – Developed in the rugged countryside of Scotland, Belted Galloways are known for their ability to thrive in challenging climates and make efficient use of forage.

And perhaps most importantly… GENETICS MATTER!

A white belt is a color pattern, NOT proof of breed.

A belted crossbred may be a wonderful animal, but that doesn't automatically make it a purebred Belted Galloway.

Likewise, a purebred Belted Galloway can occasionally be born with imperfect markings.

There is so much more to preserving this remarkable heritage breed than producing a pretty white stripe.

The belt may catch your eye, but the BREED is what makes a Belted Galloway. 🤍🖤

Video of Minnie's new calf. He was born between the 12am and 4pm night checks. Surprise but not quite a surprise because Minnie tends to have her calves very quickly once the contractions come on strong.

We do our best to be there for every delivery. But it generally is the deliveries which take a longer time that are the most challenging and Minnie is an experienced mom. This is her 7th calf. 4 heifers and 3 bulls.

Minnie welcomed us with a healthy bull calf during the night. She was uneasy at 10pm but she can be like that for hours...

Minnie welcomed us with a healthy bull calf during the night. She was uneasy at 10pm but she can be like that for hours before calving.

I checked her at midnight and she was very comfortable laying down chewing her cud. So I set my alarm for 4 hours (4am) and found her baby on the camera with his mom.

Minnie is a cow that is all business when she goes into a strong labor. She has pushed a calf out with just a few big pushes and then it is all done. And that is what must have happened here.

He has already nursed and doing great.

You can barely see him with the headlocks in the way of the camera but he is laying in front of his mom.

Everyone appears to be healthy which is more important. More photos and videos to come.

3 of our yearlings. Nyx, Southern Belle and Electra. Nyx looks smaller in this pic but I think that it is just that Southern Belle and Electra are going through big growth spurts.

We have a great group of yearlings. We also have Elsa, Black Satin and Savannah.

We had only planned on keeping 4 but bought Elsa and Nyx. These heifers were great additions to our already strong group.

We are very excited for the future of all of these heifers.
