When things go too much to plan…

I was attempting to not have much blooming in August since I assumed I wouldn’t be harvesting a lot postpartum. I’m feeling much better than I thought I would and a part of me is kind of bummed there isn’t more. There is also another part of me that is just grateful I’m not overwhelmed. 😅

We’ve got a second flush of snapdragons, lots of snapdragons, a good amount of dahlias, and soon marigolds & mums!! Oh and of course lots of slumbering bees 🐝

I can’t wait for all the fall flushes to come in and be swimming in flowers again ✨

I loooove collecting seeds! Surprisingly, I find it so much fun! I don’t save seed from every plant, but I try to save what I can, especially the easy ones. Campanula is a little trickier, but it’s still definitely manageable!

Campanula seed is one of the more expensive seeds I order, so being able to save some myself is a nice little win for the farm budget. And since it’s one of y’all’s favorites, the more the merrier as far as I’m concerned!

But there are benefits to saving seed beyond just saving money. One of my favorites is that the plants have already spent a whole season growing and thriving in our environment. In theory, their “babies” should be a little better adapted to growing in that same environment, too!

There’s something really cool about slowly building up a collection of seed that has been grown right here on our farm and continuing that cycle year after year. 🌱

I’m slowly making my way back to the flowers. 🌸

Three weeks of pretty much complete hands-off care (and honestly, quite a bit of neglect even before that) means the field is definitely in need of some looove. 😂

I’ve had so many people remind me not to rush back, that it’s okay to leave everything alone for a while — and I’m so grateful for that reminder. But the truth is, being out in the flowers brings me so much peace and joy, and those things feel really important to me during this postpartum season.

I have a LOT of work ahead of me, but I’m excited to slowly bring everything back to life and get things recovered and beautiful again for a full fall season. 🍁

We welcomed baby number three earthside yesterday morning. 🤍

He surprised us by arriving a little early, but he made his entrance in the comfort of our own home just as we had hoped. Everyone is healthy, settling in, and soaking up these precious first moments together.

As you can imagine, flower subscriptions won’t be going out this week (we’ll make them up next month), and I’ll be taking some time away from emails and messages while we adjust to life as a family of five. I’ll get back to everyone as soon as I can, but for now I’m fully embracing this sweet season.

Thank you all for your patience, support, and kindness. You probably won’t hear much from me over the next couple of weeks, but we’ll be back and ready for a beautiful fall season before you know it!

This weekend’s bouquets are a beautiful mix, but the lisianthus are definitely the stars of the show! 🤍

This is my last hoorah before baby arrives, so it’s your last chance to snag flowers for a little while! The stand is stocked with everything left in the cooler, and I may (or may not!) harvest a little more throughout the weekend depending on how this 38-week-pregnant body is feeling. Once we’re sold out, that’s it!

FINALLY!! The dahlias have started to arrive!

For once I didn’t plant that late but the heat and lack of rain, plus deer pressure (that we’ve never had before so those poor creatures are desperate too!) has made them slow pokes.

What better way to celebrate their arrival than a Stand Stock?! There may only be a few dahlias so far BUT we still have a ton of lisianthus!! I’m thinking Thursday, Friday, and possibly Saturday but details to come later this week!

Who’s getting their flower fix from the stand this weekend?! 🌸💐🌻

What’s this lovely rainy evening consist of for me?

The never ending cycle of seed starting. Checking seedlings hardening off and preparing to get planted plus starting another round!

I’m admittedly a little late for some of these things but I should still get a good harvest before the season ends! I usually prefer to direct seed this late in the season but with the lack of rain all year I’m biting the bullet and starting them inside. This will make a beautiful fall flush… as long as I get them hardened off and planted before baby number 3 makes their arrival. 🤞🏼

A side of flower farming you don’t always see. 🌱

One of the most cost-effective ways to grow a flower farm is by propagating plants from cuttings. These little cuttings came from heirloom mums I planted this spring, and this is already my fourth round of rooting them!

The cuttings come from a process called pinching, which encourages the plants to grow bushier while delaying bloom time—exactly what I want so these mums flower beautifully in the fall. Since these were taken a little later in the season, they may not bloom this year, but they’ll put on enough growth to overwinter and become next year’s stock plants.

It’s a simple way to multiply plants and save money. I’ve had success propagating mums, cosmos, zinnias, snapdragons, dahlias, and plenty of others. It’s one of those behind-the-scenes jobs that pays off season after season.
