We are excited to kick off the Virginia Women in Agriculture Network! Our mission is to foster female farmers. The Women in Agriculture Network will hold once a month zoom session highlighting women farmers, offering opportunities for women to network, and educational opportunities. Our first meeting will take place on Tuesday, December 1st, at 7:30 pm. We will hear from Meredith Bernard who is known as “This Farm Wife” on YouTube. Meredith will share about her farming operation and experiences sharing about her farming life on YouTube. Harvesting our turkeys at Thanksgiving is a time of gratitude and wonder. In April I was collecting eggs from our hens. In May we played with the newly hatched “turklings”. Through the summer they helped themselves to blackberries, raspberries, and hazelnuts. This wet fall grew abundant grass which they forage on constantly. At the onset of cold weather they put on a small layer of overwhelmingly delicious fat that you never find on grocery store birds. And now, just as nature goes dormant for winter, we harvest these fully-grown turkeys. Their meat is a nutrient dense concentration of the fruit of our land... the sum of an entire mini ecosystem. And since we always keep the best for next year’s breeding stock, these birds exist within an upward cycle where every life has long-term meaning: the breeding stock who got the luckier lot in life AND their companions who will grace Thanksgiving tables, nourishing mankind and returning dollars back to the farm that gives their lineage life. 🦃
