So Mother Earth decided it is winter! Here in our corner of Utah we have had cold/dry weather for months! I think the last good snow in the valley was in November. Thursday we got snow, Friday, we got rain, and Saturday we woke up to this! It is so beautiful outside!

My daughter asked for pictures of teen drivers and was amused for hours at what came up.

Interior design tips from the homestead...

Today we are showing you the back to school look in the homestead dinning room. Key features...
The chicks. Every fall decor should include the week old brooder boxes that hold the chicks waiting for cooler temps so they can survive the garage.

Next we show the still unfinished home repair projects. Yes, we know it has now been 5 years since we took out the built in shelves and we still have not moved the electricity or built a mantle over the fake fireplace. (Wish it were a real one....). And if you saw the chair, on the chair, we know the leg is broken. It will get fixed... eventually.

And finally our dining room holds the supplies, books, copies, and mess of homeschool planning. Ok, my baby may be a senior, at a charter school, but homeschooling is in the blood now so I'm prepping for the 4 classes I am teaching at a once a week homeschool group.

I hope your back to school decor is everything you love and dream about also! Happy Homesteading!

Our 2 week old layers and 1 week old nuggets are doing well. We have not lost a single chick (usually we lose one or two the first week because shipping is hard on the baby nuggets). We did almost throw one away while cleaning out the brooder box. He jumped in as we were rolling up the Chuck pads and was screaming from the trash bag. But all are safe and well now.

28 Cornish Cross arrived this morning. I picked them up at the post office and all of them look good. We ordered 25, but they send a few extra because transit can be rough. I've got them on medicated chick feed for this first week while they are in the house.
Our 8 layers are also going great, starting to get feathers of their wings. My house sounds like an aviary.

My next batch of meat birds arrive next week but we also need some new layers. Ours are a few years old and are slowing down production. So, if I'm going to have the chick supplies out, might as well do them all at once!
I planned to get 4, but ended up with 8. You know, chicken math.
A Buff Orpington, black Australorp, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Cinnamon Queen, Midnight Majesty Maran, Starlight Green egger, Speckled Sussex, and a Rhode Island Red.

All are hardy and produce between 220+280 eggs a year. 5 of them are dual purpose so if we wanted to produce some meet, we could do that with baby males. But the hen's purpose is eggs.

Yesterday, after dealing with the dust from having the granite counter shaved so the stove fit, I was able to can 6 quarts of spicy hamburger pickles. Today I picked a bucket of cherries and the juicer is going. The pie cherries don't make a lot of juice, but it is good to mix with the grape and apple, and I can use it for some jelly. I also have been picking a few of the largest onions, softball size, each morning and chopping, bagging, and freezing them. I have 18 quarts size bags so far, and lots more to pick. Happy Homesteading!

It's time to can and store! I have cucumbers, squash, and onions this morning. I also have more cherries, white plums, and blackberries. Looks like relish, juice, and jam.

When my regular jeans get holes, I zig-zag, patch, reinforce and then wear as garden/goat pants. These pants have been goat pants for 3 years. The holes now have holes. The patches are ripping out, and they never come clean. Today they are retiring to the trash. Park goers who see me through the fence, no need to worry about glimpsing my t**h through the back pocket holes anymore.

I wish women's jeans were made of stronger stuff!

This week I made my first sourdough pancakes and bread. They turned out beautiful! I did not take pictures of breakfast, but my first loaf needed to be memorialized.

Tonight we picked half a bucket of pie cherries and a dehydrator full of linden blossoms to make tea. I plan to make a cherry/strawberry pie tomorrow then prep some berries for the freeze dryer.
