This was not on my bingo card for today.

We were grinding a load of feed, but we were shoveling corn from inside the grain bin as it is almost empty. I popped my head out to check the scale and I noticed the PTO shaft was smoking. I got out of the bin and shut everything down, but it was already too late to save the knuckles. We took what was left of the PTO shaft to Baumler Implements in West Union, and was told it would likely be early next week. I stressed how important its, as my backup mill has already been robbed of needed parts and I had empty feeders. I knew I had some older PTO shafts at home, but didn't think any would be the right size. They told me they would see what they could do. I drove home trying to figure out if I needed to call the local co-op and have feed deliveried for the first time. When I pulled in the driveway I saw the 10' auger and thought maybe it would work, then I saw the old mill sitting in the back shed, we pulled out the PTO shaft and luckily it fit, so we could finish grinding feed. Before we finished the last load, Baumler Implements called and said they were able to find enough parts and had mine rebuilt and ready to go.

Today I was so glad we hadn't sold the old mill so I could salvage parts and very thankful to have Baumler Implements who are willing to go the extra mile to help with machine repairs when you need it the most.

Edit 6/5/24: all the open gilts are SOLD!!!

10-15 Open gilts available.

Pure Hamps and Hamp/York cross gilts available.

If you need boars to bred them with we currently can offer Hamp boars to breed the HY cross gilts, or HY cross boars to breed the Hamp gilts. Either way you would get 3/4 Hamp, 1/4 York offspring.

I will not have my phone available most of the evening, as I will be coaching my daughter's coach pitch softball game this evening. So if you text or private message me, I'll respond in the order they were received.

Edit 2:30pm on 5/27: 4 gilts are spoken for. Only the barrow option remains, let me know if I need to find a processing date or if you already have one. Barrow available anytime after July 23rd.

If anyone is interested in purchasing a whole or half hog? My son Ben will have up to five whole hogs available after the Fayette County Fair (4 gilts, 1 barrow).

I have not made processing appointments yet, so if you have a preferred locker with dates already we can deliver. If you don't care what locker they are processed at and want us to make the dates we will see what we can find.

Or if someone is interested, 4 of the 5 are Hamp/York cross gilts and should make excellent replacement gilts. These gilts were bred and raised by Marland Farms. They would be sold only as open gilts, after the county fair.

Proceeds from these hogs will help Ben pay his expenses for his first year 4-H hog project. Costs he has to pay includes buying the pigs at feeder pig price, feed, bedding and showing supplies.

Grinding more hog feed today. For some reason the hog feeders don't magically refill themselves.

Don't worry, I'm not expanding into sheep. But if you happen to see one on the highway when you drive by reach out.

My farmer friend, Lindsay at Little Grove Homestead from Stanley was looking for some summer pasture for her growing sheep flock. I just happened to have some hog pastures at Mom's (and Dad's) I was not planning on using for hogs and I really wasn't looking forward to mowing, raking and baling them twice this summer. This afternoon Lindsay and her daughter came up and I helped her run the first section of electric fence. Hopefully this partnership will take another task off my summer to do list, other than helping Lindsay rotate them through the pasture.

Sometimes you have to be creative on the farm.

Today it is windy again, what a surprise. But I still need to grind hog feed. The down spout on the auger doesn't protect the light and expensive soybean meal from blowing away in the wind, so I had the idea to repurpose the premix sack as a wind break. Its working.
