We are still waiting for the ground to dry after 4.5" of rain last week. But I was curious how close to ready the corn was, so I grabbed 6 ears from 3 different maturities this morning. And this afternoon the kids and awesome auntie Angie Pederson helped hand shell the ears so I could get a moisture reading.

102 day 21.7-23.2%
106 day 22.3-24.5%
109 day 22.7-24.8%

With our older drying setup, we like to harvest corn around 18-20%, as it takes too long to and burns a lot of LP to dry it down from a higher moisture. Then we dry the corn down to 14-15% so we can safely store until we grind for hog feed or sell.

Impulse 9-12 is a littermate to Impulse 9-6 and he was always the different boar in the litter and I knew he needed to be used here.

Everything I said about the pedigree of his littermate also applies to him.

9-12 is more of an extreme hog in our herd. He is probably the widest made boar we have every produced and has more natural thickness than any Hamp boar I think we have every raised. We was used as a natural service sire here and his first litters look good.

This summer I was showing Bob Owen a York boar and HY cross boar to be placed at North Iowa Boar Stud, and told him I had a Hamp boar I wanted him to see. He took one look at 9-12 and said this is the best boar you have ever raised. I don't know about that, but I knew I wanted to get him placed there so I could potentially be able to bred an entire crop of pigs to him. I also figured there would be interest from other long time Hamp breeders that could be interested in using him.

Impulse 9-6 is another young boar we raised and decided he needed a place here. He combines our two sow lines Carline and Twilight, plus he has a shot Brink genetics in his grandsire JDB2 Impulse 5-3.

9-6's sire MF3 Impulse 225-3 was our Iowa State Fair entry in 2024. Jerry Brink purchased partial ownership of him and he was housed at North Iowa Boar Stud for about 6 months, before he returned home to naturally bred on our farm.

9-6 is more of our typical style of boar selection. Sound footed, long legged, big framed and just wide enough as a young boar to know that he could become a massive herd boar. His first litters look good, and we are excited to use him on more sows.

The oldest sow on the farm, MF2 M Twilight 215-5, had her 7th litter waiting for me this morning. 14 born, 13 live. She was bred to our York herd boar MF5 Marshal 50-6. She wasn't supposed to farrow in Sept or to be bred to the York boar, but that happens sometimes when you naturally breed. The gilts should make excellent F1 replacement gilts.

Her mother MF9 Twilight 18-2 was a rockstar here and farrowed 12 litters. She could have gone a few more, but she no longer fit comfortably into a farrowing crate and the sow market was crazy high early last fall.

Hog chores are being done a few hours later this morning. Willow asked me to walk the Watermelon Days 5k this morning with her, as she didn't want to run/jog with her mom and brother. So as a dad how do you say no. It's been a few years since I have agreed to do the 5K, but we kept a good walking pace (16 min miles) and she ended up🥇in her age group, girls under 18.

I had to do a little trimming on our Weeping Willow (tree), as the branches were catching on my lawn mower tires. Before I could get it cleaned up Echo decided he wanted a taste.
What a crazy dog. He will also snitch green beans, asparagus, red raspberries, and sweet corn from the garden when we turn our backs.

I was planning on breeding these 8 Berkshire gilts to a Berkshire boar, but I didn't have time to get out and look for a new boar to bring into the farm this summer. I was hoping I'd see one at the Iowa State Fair that was what I wanted, but no luck this year.

So instead I decided to pivot my plans and turned in a young Yorkshire boar on Thursday. Hopefully we will have 8 litters of pure white York/Berk cross pigs come January/February 2027.🤞🐖

Remember the mystery Hampshire boar we bred, raised, used and then placed at North Iowa Boar Stud? Well we texted NIBS on Tuesday and asked he was dummy trained yet, because I had weaned 2 Hamp sows that I would like to bred to him. Bob replied he hadn't had a chance to try him yet, but would Thursday when he got back from the MN State Fair.

I received a text this afternoon that said "Success!! 28 doses. Perfect juice. Perfect tool."

I can't wait to get more sows bred to this boar. His first naturally sired litter was born on 8/18 and that litter looks great.

This boar combines our top two sows back in the pedigree (MF9 Carline 21-3 and MF9 Twilight 18-2). Finally this boar would not be possible without the help of the genetics of some great Hampshire breeders whose herdmarks can be seen throughout this boars pedigree.
