1729 is everyone’s favorite cow and not just because of her beautiful, distinctive markings. Only 3 1/2 years old, this is her second calf. She calved as a 2 year old then rebred which many first calf heifers do not do. She has been an excellent mother and her first calf has grown into a very nice heifer that we sold to a good friend. We raise all our own replacement heifers and it’s fun to go back and look at cows when they were calves.

Pi and Guardian, our two newest livestock guardian dogs. Both Pyrenees. Adding new dogs, especially older ones, is work. Especially when you added a 7 month old Anatolian just a month ago. Dog pecking order determination is more vicious than livestock. So far, it’s not been too bad. Since losing our two old dogs a month apart, we have had bald eagle predation and more recently what looks to be a mountain lion attack. So older dogs are a necessity.

Today is National Cow Appreciation Day, but we show our cattle a lot of love everyday by making sure they have plenty of fresh pasture and room to roam thanks to our rotational grazing management system. If you are located in NW Arkansas and are interested in locally produced, grass-finished, pasture-raised beef send us a message to be added to our weekly newsletter and product offering list.

Lauren Manning has written an excellent article about the fallacies regarding eating meat and what it does to the environment. Grass-based systems provide many benefits, not only to the environment but to those of us eating the final meat products. I think it's important for everyone to get a more complete understanding about our complex food system. This article does that.

The issue of livestock farming’s impact on the environment is not as clear cut as many would have you believe. In fact, many much of the data dairy and meat alternative businesses are using to market their animal-free wares are inaccurate and misleading.

Deciding when to assist with a birth is a judgement call. We do it as infrequently as possible. The front legs and head of this calf were out but the birth sac was still covering his head and legs. That puts the calf at risk of smothering. Mom had already done the hard part. Ron just tore the sac away and helped the little guy on out. He did have some fluid in his nose and throat but was able to get it out on his own. @ Weddington, Arkansas

You might see some familiar faces at Farm Aid this year! Be on the lookout for this epic commercial filmed and produced by Brian Lockwood in between bands during the concert. We were thrilled and honored to take part in this project and for the chance to share the importance of supporting small-scale farmers. Special thanks to Natural State Sandwiches for making this happen!

This is "OZARK PASTURE BEEF" by Brian Lockwood Productions on Vimeo, the home for high quality videos and the people who love them.

It appears that Mommy & Me meetups are a thing in the bovine world, too. Would love to know what the key topics of conversation were between these two seasoned mothers.
