We experienced a loss on the farm today. Our Rhode Island Red rooster, Rocky, was taken by a coyote that apparently wandered through the area. Evidence of the incident included a significant amount of feathers, but no signs of the bird remained. Rocky was a notable rooster who consistently demonstrated exceptional care for his hens. Having raised him from a chick at Tractor Supply in April 2024, his absence will be deeply felt.

From tornadoes 🌪️ to snow ❄️

Day 1 is complete! The 74 chicks 🐥 spent approximately 20 minutes outside to acclimate to the outdoors. They should be fully feathered in about 2-3 weeks.

An update on our 75 chicks, they are happy and healthy. We have commenced introducing them to soft crickets and mealworms in addition to their normal starter feed. The introduction of insects occurs when they are mostly feathered, so upon release outside when fully feathered, they possess some knowledge of what to forage for and consume. This process also fosters attention between us and the birds, thereby establishing a bond and relationship.🐓🐥🐔🐤
