Last cones picked of 2026! At this stage in the tree's growth, the cones are removed with a simple twist. Removing cones from the trees means the tree can put all its energy into growing strong, healthy branches. It also saves you from cleaning cone scales off your living room floor!

What's the difference between Canaan and Balsam Firs? To most folks, not much. In fact, many of our long-time staff can't tell them apart for most of the year!
However, spring is the exception. Both photos below were taken today (May 18th). You'll notice that while the Balsam growth is out a few inches, the Canaan has yet to break bud.
That late bud break makes Canaan the perfect candidate to plant anywhere we have a frost pocket: later growth emergence = less frost damage potential.

Fools' spring has passed, false spring is behind us, and - according to the trees - true spring has finally arrived!
During the "bud break" period, the trees always look a little wonky, but these newly-emerged branches will be fully grown in just a matter of a few months.

Canaan fans, you're in luck. We wrapped up planting our 2026 Canaan firs today. Over 6,000 of them this year!

Planting '26 has officially begun! Wasn't the nicest day, but we were still able to get about 1300 Canaan Fir in the ground before the rain started.

Sometimes, a tree just has to be culled: bad color, poor shape, pest damage, or (usually) all three. After a few seasons of tree and bough harvest, we often have a handful of these cull trees left to remove before we can replant.
Phil from K5 Land Conservation LLC saves us not only from cutting each tree by hand, but also grinds the whole tree into fine mulch. Left in the field, this mulch improves and stabilizes the soil for our next crop of trees.
