People ask this a lot: why here?

Three reasons, and you need all three.

THE LAKE. Cold water in spring holds the vines dormant past our worst frost risk. Warm water in fall stretches ripening out weeks longer than it should be. All winter it keeps our lows off the extremes that would kill a vine outright.

THE HILLS. Cold air is heavy and flows downhill like water. Plant on the slopes instead of the hollows and you get frost protection for free.

THE SAND. Sandy loam drains hard and warms fast. Vines hate wet feet, and lean soil keeps them from growing all leaf and no fruit.

Take any one away and there is no w**ery here. That is genuinely how narrow the margin is.

Multiple pours, and a guide who can answer the follow-up to the follow-up. For the person who tastes a w**e and wants to know how it got that way.

Neither is the better one. They are for different appetites, and plenty of people do the short one first and come back for the long one.

The morning of May 12th was cold! These images show the difference between a healthy Riesling plant and one that suffered freeze damage. Luckily, this damage was isolated. But a good example of the risk perennial fruit farmers take each and every day.
