Our first attempt at rolling and crimping cereal rye and vetch. After rolling, we tarped it and will wait two weeks before planting winter squash. The rye created a nice amount of biomass that will serve as a mulch for suppressing weeds, while preserving the microbial life and structure in the soil.

We are so grateful for our interns, Sydney Balan and Amanda Pattah, graduate students at the University of Michigan’s School of Public Health. Since January, both ladies have spent one day a week with us on the farm helping out with a wide variety of tasks. As future dietitians, they learned about the approaches to growing nutrient-dense food and the many ways vegetables can be used in the kitchen. They researched the nutrient profiles of vegetables and various recipes that we can share with our CSA members. It was fun eating lunch together and sharing a variety of cuisines. We are excited about the work they will do as dietitians and wish them all the best as they finish up their studies this spring!

Meet your farmers! Hi, we are Michael and Sarah Palmer of Bass Root Farm LLC in Fenton, Michigan. We operate a small, Certified Naturally Grown produce farm and raise laying hens for eggs. We have been farming since 2020, following respective careers in education and fundraising. Michael is a professional trombonist and music educator, continuing to perform and teach on the side. Sarah worked for the University of Michigan in various fundraising roles prior to staying home to raise our children. After three years of participating in local farmers markets, we now sell our produce and eggs through our seasonal CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) and our online store.

We enjoy this model of growing food for the community because we get to know you and your family. We are passionate about growing produce that tastes delicious, is nutritious, and we regularly share favorite recipes and ways of working with different vegetables.

As a Certified Naturally Grown farm, we are committed to growing produce without the use of synthetic chemicals (fertilizers, herbicides, and pesticides). We deeply care about the environment and strive to work with Mother Nature by using natural practices (low to no-till) and inputs (compost). It takes a lot of effort and requires a lot of planning, but we absolutely love the rewards of working outside, getting our hands dirty, to nurture the growth of our and your nourishment.

We look forward to getting to know you! Please get in touch with us!
