Trying out some new approaches to putting the garden to bed this year: cover crops and leaf mulch. Previously, we used tarps on most beds. This helped avoid soil erosion and w**d growth but we learned that it doesn’t help regenerate and build soil structure. So in early September, we sowed peas and oats in some of our beds and are applying shredded leaves to others. We’re curious to see how next year’s crops respond. What is your approach to putting your garden or field plot(s) to rest?

We now have our first high tunnel, thanks to . Growing in a high tunnel or hoop house allows us to expand our production into the shoulder seasons, provides a protected environment for our crops, and well, it just looks cool! 😎

There are many good high tunnel companies. We chose because they are local (Ann Arbor) and they provide an outstanding product and service. #🙌 We opted for the full installation process (swipe through to see) and we’re amazed at how quickly and efficiently they built this house to feed many. It was accomplished in one day! 😅

We feel very lucky to have this amazing growing space and look forward to posting about what happens with it. Now it’s time to get to work! 💪

Today we provided a tour of the farm for our CSA members. This is one of the great benefits of belonging to a CSA, learning about where your food comes from, how it is grown, harvested, and prepared for pick up and delivery. The whole family took part in sharing details of these processes with our members. We felt blessed that they were so interested in our farm. We love you CSA members! ❤️

One of the most valuable tools on our farm is our BCS walking tractor and the flail mower attachment. When we need to flip a bed, we often choose to mow it down and tarp it for a week or two. It’s also handy for clearing scrub brush around our property and creating walking pathways in the woods. 😎

Introducing our summer intern:

“Hi my name is Jackie and I’m interning on the farm this summer. I am getting my masters in public health in nutrition . My favorite vegetable to grow right now is asparagus but love to grow and eat any veggie. I am super excited to be working and learning here at Bass Root Farm!”

We are thrilled to have Jackie as a part of our team and are thankful for his strong work ethic and passion for learning about farming. He is the author of the recipe cards found in our CSA shares each week.

Working on installing more irrigation for our caterpillar tunnels and future high tunnel. The awesome crew from Todd’s () used a trencher to dig four feet for a frost-proof line which will connect to two hydrants. Our pasture is full of rocks and they pulled some big ones out (see last pic).

A morning harvest of arugula using the Greens Harvester () only takes a minute or two! This batch will be included in our CSA shares this week, and more will be harvested for market this weekend. 🤙

Compost, a gardener’s black gold, applied to the garden to nourish the soil. We are excited to be adding fresh compost from , which is still steaming from incredible microbial activity. Regularly adding compost is one way we increase the organic matter in our soil for optimal growth of nutrient dense vegetables.

04/17/2022

These are not our carrots. It’s April in Michigan, and our storage carrots have long been eaten, and our new carrots in the ground are still growing. I bought these organic carrots at the grocery store (five pounds for $4.59 😳.) As a small farm, there is no way we can compete with that price. I felt a little defeated. Until today when I chopped these up to roast for dinner. I immediately noticed the lack of smell. Our carrots are wonderfully fragrant. Then I popped one in my mouth. No flavor. Just crunch. The next two people through the kitchen were my guinea pigs. Taste this! What do you taste? Answer: nothing. I spent most of my life avoiding carrots, until we started growing them. Today, I was reminded why. If you’ve never grown carrots or purchased them from your local farm or farmers market, make plans to do so. It’s a completely different and elevated experience. You won’t go back.

This carpet of arugula is so gorgeous I’m reluctant to plant it. I am between wanting to eat it or snuggle it.
