The Willow was dripping its leaves. Yes, I said dripping. While walking through this morning I was imagining a watercolor scene and the leaves look like running watercolor drip.

It was so fun to breathe it all in this morning.

Help Me Get to Sheep Shearing School!

I have a big little farm dream, and I’m asking for your help to make it happen.

Next spring, I have the opportunity to attend sheep shearing school. I want to learn to shear safely, efficiently, and with as little stress on the sheep as possible—while building a skill that will benefit Hedgerow Willows for years to come.

My first goal is $450 for tuition and $500 for lodging, for a total of $950 due by December.

Then comes the BIG bonus goal:

$1,000 for shearing equipment that fits my small hands and body due by May 21st, 2027. Plenty of time to get to know the equipment for Fall Shearing.

With the training and proper equipment, I’ll be able to shear my own flock AND gain experience shearing other Finnsheep flocks, including a larger flock we are working to partner with. (this is its own exciting post later this fall)

That means more experience, better fleece handling, and more gorgeous Finnsheep wool making its way into the hands of fiber artists.

Most importantly, this skill will allow me to offer more to our customers. In the future, when you purchase a Hedgerow Willows breeding animal or fiber pet, I’d love to be able to offer shearing support and help you learn to care for that beautiful fleece.

This isn't just about sending me to school. It’s an investment in animal welfare, fleece quality, our farm, and the small-farm fiber community.

I got home around 10pm last night after leaving the house at 4:00 in the morning. It was a long and beautiful day full of education and excitement.

I was so ready to curl into bed. But a package from Sarah | Owner and Willow Farmer at Northwest Willow was sitting on my bed.

I'm so excited to have this book in our Willow collection!

When you say yes to the winds of whim, your story writes itself before your own eyes.

I did not set out to shear my own sheep. I love having the professionals out and watching them dance around the fleece, revealing the lamb beneath.

Mesmerized by the dips and bows, in a trance like meditation. The ache of muscles unknown.

I set the lines for the next chapter of this story. The tale of a girl and how she shall choose her own adventure.

My favorite sort of novels. I wonder how this chapter will unfold.

Finnsheep Friday — Meet Bonnie

It’s Finnsheep Friday, and today we want you to meet Bonnie, one of our newest additions here at Hedgerow Willows Flock & Farm.

Bonnie joined us this spring from Lost River Homestead, and she has already completely stolen our hearts.

This girl is an absolute sweetheart. She will follow you around the barn like a puppy dog, always coming over to see what you’re doing and, more importantly, whether you might have a little time for some attention. She has that wonderful Finnsheep personality that makes you fall in love with them before you even get a chance to admire the fleece.

And speaking of fleece… Bonnie comes from a fantastic maternal family with so much to offer.

Her mother has phenomenal mothering instincts and absolutely loves being a mom. She also has very high milk production and could easily be milked. She consistently grows enormous, vigorous lambs, which is exactly the kind of maternal ability we want to build into our flock.

Both of Bonnies parents also produce an incredible amount of **super-fine, super-soft fleece**. Their fleeces are exceptionally dense and heavy, making them exciting additions to a fiber-focused breeding program.

Bonnie's own fleece is already showing that promise. She has **very fine crimp**, and we’re expecting her adult fleece to produce and improve our flock with dense, soft, fine, and full of beautiful Finnsheep character.

We have high hopes for this girl.

We expect Bonnie to grow into the kind of ewe every shepherdess hopes for: **easy to handle, a fantastic mother, generous with milk, vigorous lambs, and beautiful fiber.**

Whether you're building a fiber-focused Finnsheep flock, a milk-focused flock, or a little bit of both, Bonnie has the genetics and the personality to be a wonderful addition.

We're pretty excited to see what this sweet girl grows into.

My lawn mower is out of commission for the moment, and rainy weather is setting in.

So last night I grabbed some sheep — Barley’s breeding group — and put them in the backyard proper.

This morning? Almost no dandelions left. All the dock is gone. And the sheep are happily chewing their cud while I work at the drum carder, making batts for the holiday markets.

Honestly… what a cool life I live.

And the song that was playing absolutely tickled me. I had to replace “dog” with “sheep.” Though, to be fair, I love my dogs too.

And for those waiting on eggs — the farm stand will be restocked later today.

We’re not chefs here on the farm, and we certainly don’t pretend to be recipe creators. Most days, we’re simply throwing together whatever is growing, gathering, or ready to use.

But we do love following recipe blogs and discovering good food ideas—and when we find something we love, we’re happy to share it with you!

This one caught our attention many years ago: warm rice porridge with salted duck eggs. Simple, cozy, and exactly the kind of farm-inspired comfort food we love on a chilly day.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, eating a warm congee (congee/kongee) breakfast is considered an excellent foundation for supporting women’s hormonal health, particularly by strengthening the digestive system and nourishing vital essences.

Meet Kaisha, fiber enthusiast, willow weaver, mother, urban homesteading advocate turned nano fiber farmer, shepherdess, and owner of Hedgerow Willows Flock & Farm in Ferndale, Washington.

Kaisha’s journey has always been rooted in a love of making things with her hands and a belief that you don’t need hundreds of acres to live a life connected to agriculture. What began with urban homesteading, growing food, raising livestock, and exploring traditional skills eventually grew into a small but diverse farmstead where sheep, willow, and the maker all have a place in the story.

Today, Kaisha raises Finnsheep, grows basketry willow, spins wool, weaves, teaches, and advocates for farm to community food & craft. All this while she continues exploring the connection between what we can grow and what we can create.

As a fiber enthusiast, she is especially passionate about following wool from sheep to finished piece—learning the personality of an individual fleece, preparing and spinning it, and sharing that connection with other makers. As a willow weaver, she finds that same satisfaction in planting a cutting, tending it through the seasons, harvesting the rods, and eventually weaving them into something useful and beautiful.

Hedgerow Willows is intentionally small. Being a nano farm allows Kaisha to know her animals, her materials, and the stories behind what the farm produces.

It is a continuation of the philosophy that first drew her to urban homesteading: work with the space you have, grow what you can, learn the skills, and make something meaningful from it.
