Supporting small farms and sustainable agriculture in Whatcom County. Oak Meadows Farm is a small-scale, pasture-based, diversified livestock farm. We are centrally located between Bellingham, Ferndale, and Lynden, Washington. Our main focus is pastured poultry including broiler chickens and eggs. Our poultry are rotated daily to fresh grass in movable shelters (chicken tractors). In addition to w

hat they eat from the pasture, they are supplemented with non-GMO, corn- and soy-free feed. Our broilers are available whole as well as cut up into breasts, leg quarters, wings, and backs. Hearts, livers, necks, and feet are also available. You can buy our products directly from us on our farm or at multiple local retailers. A list of the retailers and restaurant that use our products is available on our website.

Thanks to our awesome customers, we sold out of apples and peaches within the first hour and a half of opening this week!

We still have plenty of our other fresh fruit in stock, so there’s lots to choose from.

Unfortunately, I won’t be able to restock the apples and peaches before Saturday, so we’ll still be sold out of those this weekend. But we’ll have a bunch more coming in for next week!

Thank you so much for supporting our little farm store and keeping us busy!

Fresh fruit restock at Acorn Market this week!

We brought in another great round of Washington-grown fruit, including:

Organic Spartan apples
Organic yellow nectarines
Organic peaches
Fresh strawberries
Organic blueberries
Organic raspberries
Fresh blackberries
No-spray local Asian pears
No-spray local European pears
No-spray local plums

There is a lot of really good late-summer fruit coming through the store right now, and I know a lot of people especially like knowing which items are organic or grown without sprays.

And while I was stocking the store, I had to do a little quality control on one of the Margherita pizzas we carry. They’re really good as-is, but I added some homemade carnitas and finished it with hot honey. That took it to another level.

If you haven’t tried the pizzas yet, they make a really easy meal on their own, or a great starting point for adding whatever sounds good.

Stop by Acorn Market and stock up while all this late-summer fruit is here!

We have Hy-Line Brown ready-to-lay pullets coming in early November!
We are bringing in a group of 300 pullets and expect to have around 100–150 available for sale, possibly more depending on interest.
Hy-Line Browns are a commercial brown-egg laying breed known for excellent production, feed efficiency, and a generally calm, manageable temperament. They are bred specifically to lay lots of large brown eggs and are a great option for backyard flocks, farm stands, or small commercial egg operations.
These pullets will have been professionally raised by an experienced pullet grower on conventional feed, so they should arrive well developed and ready to transition into their laying flock. They should begin laying roughly 1–2 months after they arrive, depending on age, lighting, and management.
They will be available in early November for $25 each in Ferndale, WA.
I am taking orders now and will require a 50% deposit to reserve birds, with the remaining balance due at pickup.
If you are interested, send me a message with approximately how many you would like. Larger quantities are welcome, and availability will depend on demand.
Feel free to share with anyone looking to add productive young brown-egg layers to their flock!

I helped a business close down last year by taking some of their products they could not sell that would have gone in the landfill otherwise. I managed to sell through most of them, but still have over 1,000 gallons of organic apple cider vinegar left so I am offering for free to anyone that wants some. It is not for human consumption as it has vinegar eels in it, but is great for livestock water or any other uses you may have for it. Please help me empty out my shipping container that is currently half full of it.

There is a lot happening around the farm and market this week!

The dahlia patch is absolutely showing off right now, with more colors and varieties opening every day. If you have been thinking about coming out to pick a bouquet, this is a great time to visit.

Out in the field, the amaranth has taken off and is already pushing almost 5 feet tall. The pumpkins are also setting lots of fruit, so fall is definitely starting to take shape out there.

Inside Acorn Market, we have several new products and restocks this week:

• Antler Baking Co. cookie sandwiches are restocked, plus we added Raspberry Shortcake cookies, Heath Bar cookies, and White Chocolate Blackberry cheesecake slices
• Golden Glen Creamery old-fashioned salted butter
• Patty Pan Cooperative chicken tomatillo burritos
• West Coast Dumpling Co. shiitake mushroom potato pierogi

We also restocked all of the fresh berries, including strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries. Peaches, plums, and pears are still available too.

Come out, pick some flowers, see what is growing, and stock up on some really good local food while you are here.

We’re excited to share a new partnership with the Bellingham Food Bank’s gleaning program.

Starting this week, their gleaning crew will visit the farm every Monday to harvest any mature dahlias and other flowers that haven’t been picked or sold. Today was their first visit, and they harvested 14 buckets of flowers to distribute through the food bank.

This is such a great fit for our farm. Dahlias produce best when mature blooms are continually removed, making room for new flowers to develop. In the past, many of those older blooms would simply have been cut and composted. Now, instead of going to waste, they can brighten someone’s day.

The gleaning crew will continue coming each week for the rest of the flower season, as long as we have blooms available to harvest.

We love finding ways for the farm to produce more than just food and flowers for sale, and we’re really happy that these blooms can now be shared with more people in our community.

I am selling my Gibson Ridge Farms egg washer. I upgraded to a Power Scrub egg washer and no longer need the Gibson. Here is a picture of the actual machine I have as well as a picture of a new one that is fully set up. Mine comes with all the parts and I installed a new brush in the spring. We were using it for a flock of 600 hens. I am asking $1,200 for it and can ship it anywhere in the US for the cost of shipping.

The dahlias are looking absolutely beautiful today, with so many new colors and varieties opening up just this week.

Come wander through the flower patch and pick your own bouquet to take home, brighten up your table, or surprise someone special in your life. With so many different colors blooming right now, every bouquet can be completely unique.

The sunflowers are also ready for picking, so you can add a few bright, cheerful blooms to your bouquet too.

Dahlia and sunflower U-pick is open today during regular market hours from 10–4. Shears and buckets are available for you to use while picking.

While you’re here, be sure to stop into Acorn Market and check out all the local food and products from farms and small businesses throughout our area.

Come enjoy a summer day on the farm and head home with a bouquet you picked yourself.
