Our latest ADU project, “The Treehouse” has taken its perch overlooking the Sunnyland neighborhood.

Having grown up in farmland and spent most of his life living near the woods, the client was looking for options to stay close to his job in Bellingham, but gain back some of his connection to the sky. What he dreamed up, and we helped realize, was a new living space that is elevated above the existing house and will offer him a new space that is much brighter, modern, and welcoming.

This client has a totally unique and singular vision for his future home, and we can’t wait to share more as the home continues to develop.

You may have noticed this new building in downtown Fairhaven settled at the corner of 13th and Harris.

Opera House Apartments replaces what was once an underused gravel lot with ground-floor commercial and housing above, adding new density within walking distance of the waterfront. The design bridges contexts: brick façades and gabled parapets reflect Fairhaven’s historic character, while the varied rooflines, siding, and color palette nod toward the residential fabric of Happy Valley.

We’re excited to finally have some stunning photos of this project, thanks to . We’ll be sharing more images and context about the project in coming posts.

Preview of a contemporary residence coming to Bothell, WA.

A brilliant Seattle-based engineer came to us looking to design a home for him that was a retreat from his busy life running a tech startup. The result is a creative floor plan with work and play separated between the floors. The main living floor will catch the majority of the light, ensuring that his primary living spaces are still bright and enlivening on a gray Washington day.

Out at Lake Whatcom today checking in on this garage + accessory structure as it heads into the home stretch. The interior is fully sheetrocked with a smooth finish, ready for the finishes. In the next few weeks we can expect the cabinetry, tongue-and-groove ceilings, and bathroom tile to get installed.

The building exterior is almost complete less paint.. still working on a final decision there! We’re excited to see the final installation of the Ayous thermally modified wood siding. The corner detailing between the vertical wood and the Hardie siding is crisp — the 7:24 Construction team really nailed the transitions.

The homeowners are feeling the momentum, and so are we. As this project continues into finishes, we’re preparing to submit permits for the remodel and addition to the main house. That project is designed to align seamlessly with this structure, so look for some similar themes and materials in that project—more to come soon!

Set quietly into the woods in Kingston, this home was designed to feel protected by its landscape rather than placed on top of it. Heavy timber and stone give the exterior a sense of permanence, while the scale of the living room, exposed collar ties, and central fireplace create a warm, gathering-focused interior.

From above, the house nearly disappears into the trees. Privacy was a key driver here, with outdoor spaces and views oriented inward to the forest, not the road. A generous back patio extends daily life into the woods, making the changing seasons part of the experience of the home.

A very belated (but very excited) welcome to Vy, who joined the Haven team as a design technician last summer.

Vy graduated from the University of Oregon with her B.Arch in 2024 and brings experience from a Portland-based interior design firm, where she specialized restaurant interiors. She has a great eye for layout and materials and loves bringing spaces to life through rendering.

Originally from Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, Vy recently relocated to Bellingham and is spending her free time exploring new restaurants, traveling back to Oregon to see friends, and hanging out with her adopted kittens. If you have a favorite boba spot in town, she’s all ears.

The holidays are over… and if hosting reminded you that everyone could use a little more space, you’re not alone.

An ADU creates room for family to stay close without living on top of each other—guest space when you need it, everyday flexibility the rest of the year. Consider this your sign that this is the year to build the extra space that makes hosting feel easy.

Once a year, we step away from the office and spend a full day together off-site. It’s a chance to slow down, look back on the year behind us, talk honestly about what’s working (and what requires change), and start shaping where we’re headed next.

This year’s retreat was filled with thoughtful presentations from each of our architects, shared meals we cooked together, and lots of in-between conversations that don’t always happen during a normal workweek.

We’re grateful for the time to reconnect outside the studio, and even more grateful for the care, effort, and thought this group brings to our work every day. A true thank-you moment as we wind down the year.

And a big thank you to for hosting us in such a beautiful, cozy place. 11/10 reccomend!

After nearly 12 years with Haven Design Workshop, Amy is moving on from on from her role with the firm. We want to take a moment to sincerely thank her for everything she’s brought to Haven. Amy has been a steady presence behind the scenes and a familiar face to many of our clients and collaborators over the years. We’re grateful for her years of dedication and care, and we wish her all the best as she steps into her next chapter.

With over four inches of rain falling in Bellingham this week, we’ve been thinking a lot about how buildings meet water.

On this Japanese-influenced home, we used rain chains in place of traditional downspouts, allowing water to move visibly and intentionally from roof to ground. The chains feed into a curtain drain system that carries water safely away from the foundation, while generous roof overhangs help keep the building envelope dry and protected.

Good water management is critical to how we design buildings at Haven — and we’re always looking for ways to make something purely functional into a design element.

Framing is complete on this Lake Whatcom garage, and the angular windows are already stealing the show. Perched on a hill overlooking the Lake, the big windows frame the views that will define the new space—an home office for the owners, a generous play and hangout area for their girls, and an upper deck made for summer evenings.

Below, the structure creates room for the practical side of lake life: covered boat storage, parking, and a sheltered patio ready for grilling and year-round use. Designed as an extension of the main home, this addition will enhance the use of this beautiful piece of property.

We’re excited to see how the garage interiors start to take shape under the guidance of the talented team at , and even more excited to dive deeper into phase two: a renovation and addition for the 1980s main house.
