The bees are busy this spring. They have been enjoying the apricot blossoms, ash and elm tree pollen, and the infamous dandelions.

This bee is carrying pollen with her hind legs in a pollen basket also called a corbicula. Bees use pollen for protein and other important nutrients.

Honeybees do not hibernate during the winter. Instead they will cluster tightly together inside the hive. The worker bees will vibrate their bodies to generate heat to keep the queen and themselves warm. The center of the cluster usually maintains a temperature around 90–100 °F. So even when it looks like this outside, the inside will have a bee colony that is nice and toasty warm.

Did you know a bee has 5 eyes! 2 large eyes- one on each side of their head and 3 simple eyes on the top of their head. The simple eyes can't detect shapes but they do detect changes in the light. This gives bees the ability to detect and avoid predators from above.
