What's all the buzz here on the homestead? Honeybees, of course! Through 4H, Charlotte was able to get a whole honeybee setup. Today, her bees arrived, and she got them all into their new hive. We hope they like it here! She can't wait to harvest honey in a few months.
Big thanks to the amazing Mike Wolfe for mentoring Charlotte and all the other 4H honeybee club kids.

With our riding mower not being able to mow, we moved our other lawnmowers to the front portion of the property. Not only do they mow, they fertilize, and they are all due to pop out baby lawnmowers real soon.

About 7 weeks back, we picked more than a bushel of apples at our friends, the Painter family. We ate many, but the rest we fermented and turned into apple cider vinegar. Today, we bottled up nearly 11 gallons of raw, unfiltered vinegar with the mother. It's tart and zingy with a PH just below 3.0. We are super excited! This will be used for salad dressings, fire cider, four thieves tonic, and much much more.

While out foraging the berries from the Northern Spicebush (Lindera Benzoin) on the homstead today, Charlotte found this little guy. When I say "found," I mean she accidentally brushed her hand on the poisonous spines of the Saddleback Caterpillar(Acharia Stimulea). Its spines cause intense, burning pain and some swelling. Immediately after touching it, Charlotte let out a loud scream and ran back to the house where Michelle was waiting to take care of her. I am happy to report Char is doing well and vows to not let this incident stop her foraging. What a trooper! #

Summer has been flying by! It has been nonstop craziness! We planted 50 tomato plants and a dozen young blueberry bushes. The rest of the garden has been neglected, unfortunately.
For Charlotte, summer has been amazing. Swimming lessons with the amazing Paul Theimer, catching her first fish and learning to use a bow and arrow at BOCO Wild, overcoming her fear of snakes at the library's reptile event, and finally participating in the library's summer reading challenge. She read over 30 hours in 3 weeks and found a lot of great books.
Mayze, the puppy is 17 weeks and over 40 lbs. She now lives outside full-time with the little lambs. She is doing a great job! She has been a wonderful addition to our homestead.
It has been incredibly warm this summer. Unfortunately for us, our AC units capicitor and compressor gave up the ghost. It was 96F in our bedroom today. It was absolutely miserable. Fortunately, mom and dad have allowed us to come stay with them and enjoy their AC. We stayed a few days last week as well, but that was because a summer storm rolled through and knocked out power in our neighborhood for over 20 hours. High temps and no power make for rough times.
But enough of the negative stuff and back to the positive. We had a great evening at the Buchanan Community Carnival last week. We ate lots of good fair food, and Charlotte rode lots of fun rides all while great live music played in the background. We look forward to going again next year!
On Friday, we went with mom to the Roanoke SPCA. She adopted the sweetest little dog, Toto. She is a spunky little lovebug that has brought mom so much joy already.
Today, we were blessed with 11 baby ducklings. Our mama duck has been sitting on her nest for over a month, and today, the little ones were finally ready. Now we are waiting on the other 3 mama's nests to start hatching. It's going to be duckling central at the barn!
Tomorrow, it will be in the 90s again. Michelle and I will spend the day working outside. Animals to move, garden to tend, and a butchering to prep for!

Dinner date for Archer and Mayze! Archer is normally very protective of his food, but he is quite the gentleman with Mayze. She finished off her bowl, and he stood back so she could have a taste of his food.

Say hello to Mayze! She is our new livestock guardian dog. She is 75% Anatolian Shepard, 25% German Shepard. As she gets bigger, she will be spending more time with our ewe sheep and our turkeys and, of course, Archer, our Great Pyrenees.
