🌾 Big News on the Farm: Meet Thistle! 🥛✨
Summer is officially rolling in, and the pastures are bustling with some major changes around here!
First up, an update on our sweet mama, Pearl. She is officially dried up right now and putting all her energy into growing a sweet baby due this October! 💛 We are so proud of her and can’t wait for that autumn calf.
But with Pearl taking her well-deserved maternity leave, our milk pails would be completely empty... which brings me to our newest family member: Thistle! 🌸🐄
We purchased her about two weeks ago from a wonderful home. She is a beautiful 7-year-old Jersey gal, and just like Pearl, she is tested A2A2. She has settled into the rhythm of the farm beautifully and is giving just over 3 gallons a day currently.
🤎 An Honest Heart-to-Heart on Our Herdshare...
With our local dairy landscape shifting lately, my inbox has been absolutely flooded with families looking for fresh, raw milk. I wish I could say yes to every single soul reaching out.
If I wanted to, I could easily add 20 new herdshare members to our book by tomorrow morning. But the truth is, we just don’t have the capacity, and we are not expanding our herdshare members at this time.
Bringing Thistle home has finally allowed me to start making our own butter, yogurt, cheeses, and all the things for our kitchen again. If I sold that milk away, it would completely defeat the original purpose of why we invested in a family milk cow in the first place, to nourish our own home first.
Truthfully, there is a massive demand for raw dairy lately, but at $8 a gallon, there really isn’t enough profit to justify turning this into a full-scale commercial business. The sheer amount of time, physical labor, and cost that goes into managing dairy cows is . . . a lot. I refuse to let myself get burned out by giving all our milk away and leaving our own family table empty.
To actually make a milk business profitable with the skyrocketing costs of hay, grain, and fuel, I’d realistically need to charge much more than the $8 a gallon I do currently.
So for now, we are keeping things small, intentional, and focused on our family and existing customers. Thistle is keeping our counters full of fresh cream, Pearl is resting up for October, and we are fiercely protecting the slow, joyful peace of this life we are building. 🏡✨
Thank you all for understanding, for loving our animals alongside us, and for supporting our journey from afar!
