Did you know alpacas have a split upper lip?👄

Here, Cream Puff is demonstrating that little split called a labial cleft and how each side can move independently.

Think of their lips like two tiny, flexible fingers. They use them to carefully pick and sort their food, grabbing the good stuff while pushing aside dirt, debris, plants they don’t want, or nibbling on things like cool, metal fencing.

It also helps them graze close to the ground without pulling up the roots—and unlike cows, alpacas don’t use their tongues to grab their food.

Who knew those adorable little lips were so talented?

Anatoly and Botticelli are ready to make it happen! These two very curious boys are becoming quite the friendly little gentlemen and LOVE coming up to say hello. And if you’re lucky, you might just get a sweet, wet alpaca kiss!

Want to meet these adorable boys in person? Come visit us Thursday–Sunday, 10 AM–5 PM for Meet & Treats. Grab a cup of grain and get ready for some up-close alpaca fun.
