🐷 Educational Spotlight: Picturing & Marketing Showpigs 🐷

At Hornet Show Pigs, education is just as important as producing quality livestock. Teaching students how to properly picture and market showpigs is a valuable skill that builds confidence, responsibility, and industry knowledge.

📸 Learning Through Picturing
Students play an active role in:
• Setting pigs up correctly to evaluate structure, muscle, balance, and body shape
• Understanding how angles and lighting impact what a judge or buyer sees
• Learning patience, animal handling, and attention to detail

These skills translate directly to the show ring and beyond.

🧠 Marketing as a Teaching Tool
Marketing pigs isn’t just about selling — it’s about learning how to communicate honestly and effectively:
• Evaluating strengths and managing expectations
• Explaining why a pig fits a certain exhibitor or show
• Building confidence in talking about livestock

📈 Why This Matters for Students
Hands-on involvement helps students develop:
• Work ethic and accountability
• Critical thinking and evaluation skills
• Real-world experience in agriculture marketing

At Hornet Show Pigs, we’re proud to use every pig as a teaching opportunity. By involving students in the picturing and marketing process, we’re helping prepare the next generation of livestock leaders — both in and out of the show ring.

💡 Great pigs. Great pictures. Greater learning.

Service Sire Announcement: WAKE UP CALL 🟢🟡
Bred by Keplinger | Housed at Real McCoy & Malcolm
We’re excited to share that Willow (All or Nothing x Never Before x Curtain Call), one of the cornerstone females in our herd, has been bred to Wake Up Call at Real McCoy & Malcolm! After the success of her first litter bred to Claws, we felt that we needed to push the limits even further.
This mating brings together two pedigrees built for consistency, design, and that big-ring look — the kind of cross we expect to make waves in 2026.
✅ Wake Up Call = Wide Awake × AC (Quite Frankly × Cinderella)
Known for stoutness, build, and presence, his pigs combine true power with the kind of design that turns heads in the ring.
We expect this mating to hit hard:

📆 Due February 15th, 2026
🎯 Ideal for late summer and early fall 2026 shows, including the Virginia State Fair.

Litter Prediction:
This February litter has all the makings of a can’t-miss set of showpigs. Wake Up Call is stamping them with elite design, elevation, and that high-end show-ring look, while Willow brings power, and the kind of structural integrity that holds up from jackpots to State Fair.

We’re expecting a consistent group that will be:
Tall-fronted, square-built, and big centered
Stout in bone and feature, yet still sleek and attractive from the side
Wide and true off both ends, with the kind of build that wins big rings
Packed with the look and presence Wake Up Call has quickly become known for
💥 This mating should make barrows that can go win early and often — ideal for jackpots, county shows, and especially the Virginia State Fair.
💥 The gilts should be the keep-kind — elite design with sow-quality genetics behind them.
If you’re looking for pigs that are functional, eye-catching, and bred to compete at every level, circle February 15th, 2026 on your calendar. This set will be special.

🎲 Service Sire Announcement 🎲

Exciting breeding news from Hornet Showpigs! Our gilt Ivy has been bred, and we’re fired up about the potential in this powerful pairing.

💥 Gilt: Ivy
Pedigree: After Party x Dash 8 x Next Intention

🔥 Service Sire:
🎰 Casino – Money Line x Tricked Out (Baby Girl)
• Bred by: Keplinger Genetics
• Owned by: Real McCoy Genetics
• Out of the same mother as the Grand Gilt at the 2025 Expo
• Dense and attractive with an awesome skeleton
• Perfect length of body with sharp edges and bold design
• Built to fix problems and keep them current in today’s competitive show ring

📅 Due Date: January 1st, 2026
🎯 Ideal for 2026 jackpots, late summer county fairs and even some gilts that should feed well for the breeding shows at the State Fair of Virginia.

🔮 Litter Prediction:
This cross should generate pigs that are square-built, dense-bodied, and heavy-structured with the look and extension to win in the ring. Casino’s added mass, shape, and build complement Ivy’s feminine design and proven maternal foundation — setting the stage for a high-quality set of both elite barrows and future show gilts.

Stay tuned as we count down to farrowing — we’re confident this mating will bring something special to the Hornet Showpigs lineup! 💫

🐝 Educational Spotlight – Hornet Show Pigs 🐖

One of the greatest advantages our students gain through Hornet Show Pigs is the chance to experience every phase of a working swine operation first-hand. From breeding to daily care, and all the way through the show ring, our program provides real-world skills and knowledge that can’t be learned from a textbook alone.

This week, we’re spotlighting one of the most important parts of our operation — the farrowing process.

🌸 Farrowing & Sow Behaviors
We are especially excited as our sow, Willow, is due to farrow this Friday! In the days leading up to farrowing, students watch for signs such as nest-building, restlessness, or a drop in feed intake — all of which signal that labor is near. During farrowing, they’ll observe Willow’s natural instincts to deliver and protect her litter, while also learning the importance of providing a calm, clean, and safe environment.

🐷 Piglet Processing
Once piglets are born, students assist in the crucial first steps of piglet care. This includes making sure each piglet nurses to receive colostrum, processing tasks like clipping needle teeth, docking tails, and administering iron shots — all to give piglets the healthiest start possible. Students also practice weighing and recording data, building skills in animal husbandry and recordkeeping that prepare them for future agricultural careers.

At Hornet Show Pigs, our goal is not only to raise quality livestock, but also to prepare students with the hands-on knowledge, responsibility, and confidence needed to succeed in animal agriculture.
