Our home bee yard is at 2,700 feet in elevation and so we are a couple weeks behind the lower elevation areas for things blooming out. This weekend, I saw black locust in full bloom, and I think tulip poplar and black berries will bloom within the next few days. The apple orchard has been in full bloom for several weeks but the blooms are mostly gone now. The bees are already making honey and will continue to do so through July.

Now that September is here, all honey supers have been pulled and it’s time to start preparing the bees for winter. All hives have been inspected and looked great. Boxes are full of bees with lots of colorful pollen coming in along with some nectar. Everything the bees bring in from now through the end of October will be their food to get them through winter.

Recently, my dad and I spent a day together wax dipping a truckload of new honey supers and bottom boards, most of which were handmade by Fred Ayers and myself. I drove to Knoxville and bought the microcrystalline and paraffin waxes to go in my custom wax melting tank built by Duncan Mechanical. We ran two propane burners under the tank and had the wax temperature up to 300 within a few hours. Wax dipping boils out all moisture in the wood and then absorbs the wax mixture into the deepest pores of the wood, waterproofing it without any waxy feel. No painting is necessary, although you can still paint if desired, and these boxes and bottom boards should last for at least 25-30 years. The next step is to get these supers on the hives so the bees can fill them with honey 🍯.
