We have been cutting Christmas Trees from the homestead as part of land management for the last 5 years. The Piñon and Juniper have re-encroached into the rangeland and are consuming water and nutrients the grasses and forbs desperately need, my grandparents removed them in the 60’s and now I have the welcomed responsibility to continue that conservation work. By selecting and cutting a small number of Piñon trees each Christmas, many Flagstaff folks are able to enjoy a local tree that was cut for more than just being a Christmas tree. The tree was not just cut for thinning purposes either, some trees were saved and made ornaments from them the following year which gave those trees 3 separate uses.
The joy these trees bring to people is something incredible to experience and amazing to be part of!
This approach has been a success but we are getting close to the management goal on the Piñon trees. So next year reach out in November if you would like a tree!
We still have much more to go with the juniper trees and it will be considerably more work. I have a plan for this work to also try to create additional conservation practices and uses for them.
We sincerely appreciate and thank all of the people, friends, markets, farmers, ranchers, vendors and businesses this year! (And all years)!
The tree shown here was one we cut and sold this year, they decorated it so amazingly and it is so nice to see!
Merry Christmas from all of us!
