Mavis Farmacy & Ecology Lab We have our first Permaculture Farm Lab, roughly 1 acres on the grounds of Mavis Manor.

The Mavis Institute and Mavis Farmacy: School of Useful Things help people build more capable, grounded, and resilient lives through practical education in permaculture, homesteading, sustainable living, mindfulness, Appalachian wisdom, and care of land. Included on this acre is are landscape texture capable of producing large food yields, a small fruit forest, a resource-efficient sustainable Barn, and a carbon offset Forest

Part of the Non Profit, is to teach folks to be community-based self-reliant. We can build a safe, effective heating unit for under $500 that you can burn only falling twigs and junk wood in. (and stay very warm) We can build a waste management system that has no virus vectors and in a few years all the human body waste become rich compost, or under $700 We can build landscape texture that requires minimum rainfall but still will produce high yields.

Welcome to Mavis Farmacy: School of Useful Things.

This page is becoming the home for practical farm-based learning from Southern West Virginia: gardening, homesteading, chickens and ducks, permaculture, herbal traditions, mindfulness, Appalachian wisdom, simple technology, old-house projects, and the daily work of building a useful life.

Some days we’ll be in the garden.
Some days we’ll be feeding chickens.
Some days we’ll be working on the barn.
Some days we’ll be talking about life, community, and how to stay grounded in a noisy world.

This is not about pretending farm life is perfect. It is about learning from real work, real seasons, real mistakes, and real responsibility.

If you want to grow food, care for animals, learn old skills, simplify your life, or just spend more time around practical wisdom from the holler, you’re in the right place.

Welcome to the School of Useful Things.
