Today's adventure involved a flock of birds - that were not chickens.

My friend, Avi, and I were surprised by an invitation for a free flamingo encounter at the Philadelphia Zoo when we visited this morning. Their keeper is working on helping the flamingos learn that people aren't scary, so that they can start offering this experience to the public.

It was a blast! We convinced five flamingos that we are not threatening with a ladle full of flamingo kibble. And I got to ask questions non-stop about flamingo behaviors, movements, and anything else that sparked my fancy.

Sausage can be as simple as a sandwich or adding it to a delicious soup. We have a few flavors to choose from; all of them delicious.

The hay supply is a little worrying this year. We had a drought all summer, so we didn’t make much hay, which is true for a lot of farmers around us as well. Predictions are that hay prices are going to be high this year because of low supply and high diesel prices.

A lot of my hay I buy from the farmers around my block. It’s my favorite way to buy because it’s not only convenient for me, but works well for my neighbors as well.

My herd is smaller going into winter this year and I do have crop insurance, so I did get some checks, so here’s hoping it “all comes out in the wash.” 🤞

The Fleetwood Area Public Library Homeschool Group came out to the farm today! We learned about the different leaf shapes you can find on trees and how we can use observation skills to learn to identify trees.

The kids did a short scavenger hunt using a plant id sheet and then it was a free for all of finding plants we didn't know and learning what they are. It was so much fun and the kids stumped me a few times with leaves I couldn't identify!

Loved seeing these bright minds learning so enthusiastically. 💜

I combined my two herds today. It's always a party for a bit while the herds say hello and figure out whose the boss. The cool weather made them run a bit, but they've settled down into a mob of green eating machines.

It is always easier to take care of one large herd, but as long as there is a bull with the group, I have to keep them separate so I have no unexpected babies!
